My cousin Cheriee is a nurse. She’s returned to work. Cheriee is still having to manage all that needs to be managed because of this event.

My cousins - Cheriee and her Mom, Dolores (Missy), (pictured) and their family were displaced by an electrical fire to their house that occurred on Saturday, 11/25. Thank God no one was injured.

Cheriee is working hard to secure temporary housing where her Mom and her family will live while her home is being restored.

Cheriee is her Mom’s caregiver. Being a caregiver is not as straightforward as it seems. There are things to contend with that those on the outside looking in can’t see and will never know. Missy has required accessible housing for sometime now and had that where they were living.

Cheriee is trying to find a place that will be beneficial to her Mom and will accommodate her Mom’s many limitations. Finding temporary accessible housing is what is making this transition so unusual and more costly.

What is accessible housing? Accessible housing is housing that people with limitations, impairments or disabilities can easily enter and use safely.

Why is accessibility important? People with functional impairments living in accessible home environments have better health and are better able to accomplish everyday tasks and manage living independently than those living in conventional or inaccessible home environments.

Is accessible housing affordable? Individuals requiring accessible housing often struggle, to find adequate, accessible housing at affordable prices. This affordability problem is exacerbated by the frequent challenge that housing units that have been built accessible or undergone renovations to become accessible typically are more expensive than their non-accessible counterparts.
