Help for Blanca's Family Displaced by a House Fire

Title: Help for Blanca's Family Displaced by a House Fire

The Tragedy: On July 20, 2023, Blanca woke up at a little after 3:30 am to a yellow light that she soon realized were flames beginning to engulf her home. Disoriented, she raced to wake up her three kids. Amidst the chaos, she discovered her 16-year-old son's room was already starting to be consumed by the flames. Fortunately, she and her kids escaped - traumatized, but unharmed, and the tenant living in the back studio unit also managed to escape with only burns to her feet.

After the fire department put out the fire, Blanca and her kids surveyed the damage. Her 16-year-old son lost everything- his clothes, his computer, shoes, everything. The others were still able to recover a few of their smoke-damaged clothes and some other items here and there, but now they had no place to live, and at the worst possible time – just as the school year was about to begin for her younger teens and her eldest was set to start his first year of college.

The Mom Behind the Story:
Many of you do not know Blanca, but she is super hard-working and goes above and beyond to help others in addition to supporting herself and her children. For example, previously, there was an elderly tenant who was beginning to suffer from dementia who lived in the back studio unit of the home. The Landlord asked if Blanca could collect the rent from him on a monthly basis, but Blanca went above and beyond to help him as much as she could. She would often check in on him, help him care for his dog, and bring him extra food that she knew he liked while letting him maintain as much dignity to live as independently as he could.

Ultimately, however, there came a time when he could not live on his own safely. One day, she found he had injured himself, the wound had become severely infected, and his health was in danger. Blanca helped to get him the urgent medical care he needed, worked with the Landlord to secure as many of his possessions as possible, and then worked with social services to get him the 24/7 residential care he needed since he could no longer care for himself. This is just one example of the kind of person Blanca is, so we wanted to make sure we all stepped up to help her in her time of need.

Resilience in Adversity: With no family in the country to turn to, Blanca has tapped into her network of friends for support. They have rallied around her, helping her secure temporary shelter and later a small 1-bedroom apartment – all she can afford. However, their new living conditions have turned out to be far from ideal. The rent is double what she was paying at my dad’s house. The apartment lacks air conditioning, and the outdated electrical system struggles to power even basic appliances like the refrigerator and microwave. A friend lent them a portable air conditioner, but the apartment's wiring can't handle the load, so the air conditioner cannot be used.

The Struggle Continues: In the face of adversity, Blanca’s determination remains unshaken. She is actively seeking a more suitable place to live, one that provides her family with the basic necessities for the next year while the home they were renting is being renovated after the fire. However, the reality of the rental market in Los Angeles County is daunting, especially for a single mother, working 4 jobs and raising three teens.
