HELP FOR BEAUTIFUL BUT TRAGIC TABBY CAT CHYNA
Chyna was found in an alleyway in Purley one morning recently. She is very lucky to be alive and without the swift actions of her rescuer, she would surely not be.
Chyna’s rescuer left the house for work early one morning. Someone had parked where she usually did, so she had to walk down an alley to where she had parked her car. As she walked she heard a sound and found Chyna lying on the ground bleeding. It looked like she had been attacked, possibly by a fox. She was also heavily pregnant.
Her rescuer wasted no time getting Chyna (so named after being found in the alley behind a Chinese restaurant) into her car and rushed her straight to an emergency vet. She contacted us whilst on the way to ask for help and of course we said yes.
We made contact with the emergency vet where Chyna was in intensive care and arranged for her to be moved to our vet, where any surgery needed could be performed.
We asked our amazing vets, Anne Nelson Vets, to do everything they could to try and keep Chyna and her unborn kittens alive. Initially it was thought Chyna may have neurological damage and she needed a catheter as was unable to urinate. Her tail was almost completely ripped off. They hoped they could build up her strength enough for her to survive giving birth when it was due to happen.
The vets thought Chyna may have been hit by a car, or it may have been an attack. We may never know what happened to this poor girl, but at least she was in the right place to get help now.
Over the next few days Chyna started to show signs of improvement. It was established that there were at least 5 heartbeats, so 5 kittens were still alive inside her. Chyna then suddenly went into labour and gave birth to 3 kittens, all premature. Unfortunately Chyna was unable to take to feeding them, so we reached out for help and Celia Hammond were able to provide an experienced kitten hand rearer. The kittens were rushed to the hand rearer in Greenwich, but despite her best efforts, they didn’t survive.
Chyna improved enough over the next couple of days for her catheter to be removed and started toileting on her own again. We were hoping she could hold off a bit longer before giving birth to the remaining 2 babies inside her, but she started showing signs of giving birth again late one evening. The vet was called in to the surgery at 10pm to do an emergency Caesarian. While doing the Caesarian she also amputated the damaged tail. 2 kittens were born - 1 was stillborn.
Our amazing vet took the only surviving kitten with her to her home to syringe feed overnight to keep the kitten alive. The kitten was rushed to Greenwich to the hand rearer the next day. We had high hopes this kitten would survive, but unfortunately the final kitten succumbed to fading kitten syndrome a few days later.
We knew it was a long shot that the kittens would survive this ordeal, but we tried our best. We are so happy to report though, that Chyna has improved enough to come out of the vets and she is currently in our rescue centre, recovering from her ordeal. Her stitches are due out later in the week and then she will be going to one of our foster homes for lots of TLC. The next step will be to get her ready to find a loving forever home in the future.
We don’t always share the sadder side of rescue with you, as it’s just too heartbreaking sometimes. But we wanted to share Chyna’s story and hope that our supporters would be willing to donate to help cover some of the costs incurred in trying to save this family. Any donations will be much appreciated ❤️❤️
