We are JAONA Bernard the mayor of the Kianjavato commune, and DEZY Harison Olivier, the local chief of Ambalahosy Sud. On the night of October 10th, a devastating fire ravaged through Ambalahosy Sud, a small and rural community located 12 hours away from the capital Antananarivo in the Southeast of Madagascar. The fire destroyed 44 houses, leaving 155 of our neighbors, including 55 young kids, without a place to live.

Our neighbors lost all their hard-earned belongings in the fire. With the majority of households relying on a single income and the average daily wage being 5,000 ariary (equivalent to 1.50 CAD or 1.10 USD), replacing their homes and belongings will be an enormous burden on each family. We hope you can help us relieve some of the pressure on each household by donating.

Many of the people affected are farmers, and some have dedicated many years of their lives to monitoring critically endangered lemur species, while others work hard to reforest the highly fragmented landscape. We believe that we can make a difference by coming together and supporting our community during this time of need.

We aim to raise $2,500. With your generous contributions, we hope to provide immediate relief by supplying food and essential cooking utensils to those who lost everything. The rest of the funds will be used to start rebuilding the houses that were lost. Every donation, regardless of size, can make a difference!

Unfortunately, GoFundMe does not operate in Madagascar. Therefore, our friends in Canada, Pamela Narváez-Torres and Nicola Guthrie, will help us receive the funds. Once they receive the funds, they will be sent in their entirety to the community of Ambalahosy Sud.

We appreciate your generosity and support.

Sincerely,

JAONA Bernard, DEZY Harison Olivier and the Ambalahosy Sud community
