Help for Mr. Gary

Donation protected
Gary is an inspiration to our neighborhood.  He meets everyone with such a joyous smile and cheerful attitude  you would think he has the world at its knees.  Gary served several tours in Vietnam where he earned a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for bravery.  During one of his combat patrols he was shot in the head.  The bullet entered his right cheek and exited his left ear leaving him deaf in that ear.

Due to the injury he was no longer fit for combat, so he joined the ranks as an MP and continued to serve for 7 more years.  When Gary came home to Illinois he got a job as a policeman, where he rose to the rank of  Chief of  Police.   As Chief, Gary was too far from the action and too close to the Politics of a public position, so in he joined the Depart of Defense as a special agent in counter intelligence.

Some years ago Gary had a stroke and never quite recovered,  he lost most of the use of his left arm and leg.  This confined him to a wheelchair where he remains today.  About 2 months ago Gary had disappeared from the neighborhood.  Asking around, I found out he was in a coma suffering from bleeding of the brain and had a 10% chance of survival.  He had been in the hospital several times over the years with complications from his injury, and the stroke, so maybe this really was it for him.    But something told me Gary  would pull through;  He's a fighter and has never let anything beat him.   Sure enough, as I was driving through the neighborhood, I saw him and his dog Alonz, on their normal tour talking to folks.   A big smile came across as I said to myself, "you beat 'um again Gary".

This last fight rendered him paralyzed in both legs and he can no longer get in or out of  the handicap friendly truck he and his wife, Maryann bought a couple years ago.

Now we get to why I am writing this.  As Gary is now paralyzed in both legs, he really needs a handicap van with a lift. Due to the debt still owed on the truck, Gary and his wife cannot get out of the loan in order to buy the van and the VA will not help because this last condition was not directly combat related.

If we can come up with $5,000, it will take care of the upside down amount on his truck and have a little left for a down payment on the van.

Gary has served us his entire life, now its our turn.

Thank you.
