Velen van jullie zullen Floor kennen. Ze is 40, woont in Amsterdam, schrijft columns voor NRC, en kreeg in september 2025 de diagnose eierstokkanker. Haar artsen zien nu een reële kans op langdurige remissie met PARP-remmers, maar deze medicijnen worden sinds kort in Nederland niet meer vergoed voor patiënten zoals zij.

Daarom start ik deze inzamelingsactie voor mijn levenslange vriendin, in de hoop dat ze de zorg kan krijgen die ze nodig heeft om deze ziekte te verslaan.

De diagnose en behandeling

Afgelopen september werd bij Floor eierstokkanker vastgesteld met een uitzaaiing buiten de buikholte, dus stadium 4. De verwachting bij deze vorm van kanker is dat genezing meestal niet mogelijk is. Maar er blijkt hoop!

Floor reageerde uitzonderlijk goed op de chemotherapie. In september was nog (onder andere) een tumor zo groot als een ei op haar scan te zien, maar tijdens haar tussentijdse operatie (de "intervaldebulking", waarbij haar eierstokken en baarmoeder verwijderd werden) werd nog maar één stukje van 2 mm aan tumorweefsel gevonden. Een resultaat dat haar artsen maar zeer zelden zien.

Kans op genezing

Vanwege die uitzonderlijke respons op de chemo heeft haar oncoloog het sterke vermoeden dat de kanker in haar lichaam HRD-positief is, ondanks dat dit niet meer medisch vastgesteld kan worden (vanwege te weinig overgebleven tumorweefsel na de operatie). HRD-positief betekent dat de kankercellen een defect hebben in hun vermogen om DNA-schade te herstellen. Dat maakt het aannemelijk dat een behandeling met PARP-remmers voor Floor van grote waarde kan zijn.

Bij stadium 4 eierstokkanker is de kans op terugkeer van de ziekte helaas groot. Microscopisch kleine kankercellen kunnen achterblijven in het lichaam, zich herstellen en later opnieuw uitgroeien tot tumoren. PARP-remmers maken het voor deze beschadigde kankercellen veel moeilijker om zichzelf te repareren, waardoor ze alsnog afsterven. Bij HRD-positieve tumoren kan deze behandeling volgens wetenschappers zeer effectief zijn.

Voor Floor betekent dit dat haar kanker jaren kan wegblijven, misschien zelfs voor altijd.

PARP-remmers niet meer vergoed

Helaas worden PARP-remmers sinds juni 2025 in Nederland niet meer vergoed voor patiënten zonder een specifieke genmutatie (een BRCA-mutatie). Floor heeft die mutatie niet. Daardoor valt zij buiten de boot, ondanks het dringende advies van haar oncoloog om deze medicijnen te gebruiken.

Zelf PARP-remmers kopen is in Nederland geen optie, dus start zij deze maand met een self-pay traject in België, waar zij hopelijk de komende twee jaar behandeld kan worden met deze medicatie en controles krijgt.

De kosten van de zorg en medicatie zullen oplopen tot duizenden euro’s per maand, een bedrag dat onmogelijk zelf op te brengen is. Ze zal in totaal zeker €150.000 euro nodig hebben om de volledige twee jaar van de behandeling te kunnen ontvangen.

Dear friends, family, and friends of friends,

Many of you will know Floor. She is 40 years old, lives in Amsterdam, writes a column for the NRC newspaper, and was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer in September 2025.

I’m starting this fundraiser for my wonderful and lifelong friend, so she can receive the treatment she needs to beat this disease.

Diagnosis and treatment

In September, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer with a metastasis outside her abdomen, so stage IV. This form of cancer is usually considered incurable, but Floor’s response to treatment has given her doctors and us all real hope.

Floor responded exceptionally well to the chemotherapy. Back in September, one of the tumors visible on her scan was the size of an egg. But during her operation (the "interval debulking", during which her ovaries and uterus were removed), all that was left was just a tiny 2mm-sized fragment of tumor tissue. According to her doctors, this is an exceptionally rare result.

A chance of survival

Because of that exceptional response, her oncologist strongly suspects that the cancer in her body is HRD-positive, even though this can’t be medically confirmed (due to the fact that there was too little tumor tissue to examine). HRD-positive means that the cancer cells have a defect in their own ability to repair broken DNA. This would make Floor’s cancer highly susceptible to treatment with PARP inhibitors, which block the backup DNA repair system (PARP) that these cells would otherwise rely on.

With stage IV ovarian cancer, the chances of recurrence are unfortunately very high. Microscopic cancer cells can remain in the body, slowly repair themselves, and grow back into tumors over time. PARP inhibitors make that process so difficult that it becomes impossible for these cells to survive.

For Floor, this means her cancer may stay away for years, possibly forever.

PARP inhibitors no longer covered by insurance

Unfortunately, since June 2025, PARP inhibitors are no longer covered by insurance in the Netherlands, for patients without a specific genetic mutation (of the BRCA genes). Floor does not have this mutation, so she’s not covered.

Accessing this medication privately in the Netherlands is not an option, so she is starting a "self-pay" treatment program in Belgium, in Belgium, this month. If all goes well, she will be treated there for the next two years.

The cost of this treatment and medication amounts to thousands of euros per month, an amount that is impossible to raise on your own. To receive the full two years of treatment, she will need more than €150.000.
