My name is Fiyah. I'm from Georgia and I am starting this Go Fund Me for my mother, my child, and myself. On April 17th, 2024, my mother Marva, who is disabled, returned home from visiting me to find that her apartment had been robbed while she was away by an employee of the Property Management Company. This person is in possession of her laptop, documents, and a notebook containing vital information. Law Enforcement even reinforced her door and checked her windows after the report was taken. Due to a change in Management while she was away, she has no idea how this person looks.
I have been battling with a debilitating Neurological condition and suffer with headaches worse than migraines daily. Unfortunately, 2 weeks later I was forced to quickly relocate myself and my special needs child after being informed that delivery of the medications I take to function daily would now be sent back to the Pharmacy by the Management of the apartment I was renting. They created a new policy where packages larger than 3x4 inches would no longer be accepted and would be returned immediately upon attempted delivery. I pleaded with them to at least notify me so that I could retrieve it promptly to no avail. I had never encountered any issues with prior management and realized I did not fit the look of who they wanted their tenants to be. I utilized all the finances I had saved up for starting my business toward moving us and everything we owned from New York to Georgia. Even with the circumstances, we were excited to have a fresh start and I was looking forward to getting better in a new environment and saving up again to start my business.
On the evening of July 9th, 2024, my child, mother, and I experienced a house fire. We have never experienced a fire before and feel extremely grateful to still be here. Although we all suffered inhaling the black smoke and residue from the fire extinguisher, I received the brunt of it because I put the fire out. Unfortunately, we all suffered from the soot in our noses and lungs as we began spitting it up along with other symptoms of exposure that are still present. We tried our best to salvage what we could. I cleaned up as much as I could, however doing so irritates my lungs and nasal cavity terribly. During an assessment of what occurred I found black mold in a closet that was not in use from water damage stemming from the apartment upstairs. I also found water marks on the ceiling and in multiple light fixtures in all but 1 room. I informed the Rental Insurance Co. and Property Management. I was then notified that the Property Management told the Renters Insurance Company that the apartment was completely livable as it is not. Our medical conditions were not considered at all. The Property Management is not willing to remediate the mold in its entirety and stated they will only clean the mold in the closet. Due to the decision being made to deny our claim we were left to stay here in inhabitable conditions. I then called The Health Dept who transferred me to Environmental Services who informed me that we needed to leave the apartment immediately. However, we had nowhere to go. I have gone to social services to gain assistance; however, I was informed that they are backed up and would get to me when they could. Yes, even in an emergency this is their procedure. We are not able to cook and are under a rule to keep all doors and windows closed and locked at night due to theft in the area. This worsens the conditions along with the consistent heavy presence of cigarette and marijuana smoke from the other tenants. This has been extremely difficult to manage daily as running air purifiers increases electric bill costs. Even though we are having to start over we are not concerned with what needs to be replaced at this time. We just want to live in a home that does not jeopardize our health. My child's summer has been impacted greatly by this situation and it has affected her mental and emotional health as well. She has not been able to do or participate in the normal things children enjoy.
At this point we need to move so that our health can improve, and my mother can begin to feel safe again. The extended fire damage, mold, cigarette and marijuana smoke exposure can lead to diagnoses that people with prior existing respiratory conditions could not easily recover from or even be fatal. We have exhausted all funds in the cleanup and our daily survival since this occurred. We contacted the Property Management Company and requested the lease to be terminated so that we could move. They responded stating that a buy out fee would have to be paid to do so. We have pleaded with them for the fee to be waived to no avail even though they are in possession of the police report. However, if not paid it would affect their communication of the positive tenancy verification to the owners of the new home we are trying to move into. We have assessed the costs of moving, and it is as follows. Security Deposit and First Month’s Rent $4,530.00, Administrative Fee $200.00, Application Fee $200.00, Moving and Supplies Fee $1400.00 (including moving my belongings from storage will allow me to eliminate that bill so that I could begin replacing non salvageable items) and The Buy Out Fee $3,144.00. This brings us to a Total Amount of $9,474.00. Any donations provided will assist us directly in the opportunity to have a fresh start.
Please excuse the picture of the sunflower however my mother is not comfortable displaying her picture due to the robbery and I am protecting the safety of my child and myself. We would appreciate any assistance that anyone could offer at this time. We would be more than grateful to fulfill this goal as soon as possible as it has already been almost an entire month of suffering through this unfortunate set of circumstances. Thank you in advance.
