On August 30, while at brunch with friends, Tom had a heart attack. After a visit to a Minor Emergency Clinic, he was taken by ambulance to OSU Medical Hospital in Tulsa. On August 30 and 31, he had back-to-back surgeries to keep him alive. He was in the ICU on a ventilator for four days. On Tuesday, September 8 he had open heart surgery with a quadruple bypass to fix him up just right. The first few days after recovery were rough, and Tom was in the ICU again for several days and had several blood transfusions. As of Sunday, September 13, Tom is home for recovery. He'll be recovering for the next few months.
Tom is fortunate to work as the Chief Development Officer at Family and Children Services, and thankfully his employer provides a solid health insurance policy, and his co-workers have been incredibly supportive. The day before his surgery, when we launched this fundraiser, we were worried Tom would have to pay 20% of all the medical costs. Conservative estimates of those costs would have presented bills to Tom that would have exceeded $50k.
We have since learned that his insurance provides a cap on out of pocket expenses. What wonderful news to receive! We've lowered the goal of this fundraiser accordingly, to cover what isn't covered by insurance, the out of pocket expenses, physical therapy/occupational therapy co-pays, home health care co-pays, and medical equipment for the home.
If you can understand how scary it would be to survive a heart attack only to then face the daunting medical bills, then you understand why it's important to help offset these costs. No one should have to face medical debt to survive a heart attack.
Instead of leaving Tom with a burdensome debt, please chip in whatever is within your means to this fundraiser. If you are super financially secure and can give $100, please do. If you have a tighter budget and can give $10, please do. This is how crowdfunding works: we all give within our means to help someone in a time of need.
