Help Fix Ham's Heart

Donation protected

Hi everyone, this is Alexander Hamilton (or Ham, Ham-snack, Ham-bone for short). He's my best friend. Hammy has  congenital heart condition that needs surgery, soon. We need to raise $4000+ in order to get him the heart surgery that can save his life. Thank you so much for reading our story.

Ham has been by my side since he was a teeny 8 week old baby. I didn't know when I first got Ham that he had a heart murmur, but I found out very soon when he went to the vet.

Hammy was super sick as a kitten
Ham had a constant upper-respiratory infection, he couldn't eat by himself or even clean himself. He was glued to me 24/7, and slowly but surely he started to feel better and become more independent.

Flash forward a year and a half, I'm in grad-school and my partner and I are engaged, and Hammy has a whole apartment to play around in and claim as his kingdom. We've known for a while that Hammy needed to get an echocardiogram done to learn more about his heart murmur and once we scraped together the $400 to get the test done we scheduled it right away.
The vet found that Hamiltons heart has a serious congenital defect (meaning he was born with it). The left side of Ham's heart is more than twice the size of the right side of his heart. His "ductus artemosis" that brought the blood from his heart when he was inside of his mom was supposed to close when he was born, but the valve stayed open and is causing the left half of his heart to stretch out bigger and bigger and loosing it's pumping power.
We feel so so lucky because this is a congenital defect that can actually be surgically corrected, and that's why we're asking for help.

The vet told us the surgery would cost upwards of $4000, not including the additional doppler study that needs to be done on Hammy under sedation at a local vet hospital.

It would mean the world to us (Will and Willow, aka Hammy's parents) if you could help us raise this money to save Hamilton. Unfortunately, due to the nature of this condition, Ham's heart will continue to stretch out like a rubber band and he's at risk for heart failure.

Ham brings so much joy into our lives and I cannot imagine my world without him. Hammy needs to have this surgery as soon as possible so any and all efforts you can make to help us would go such a long way!!
