Help First-Gen Student Reach College Dream
Donation protected
In July of this coming summer, I should be heading to Binghamton University to spend a month participating in their Educational Opportunity Program’s Summer Bridge before I begin my freshman year of college; however, as of right now, this will not be possible because I have a $6,368 out-of-pocket cost which my family and I cannot afford. What should be an exciting opportunity for me has become a stressful and heartbreaking one due to this, and it feels like my hard work throughout my high school career has been for nothing.
Growing up in a low-income immigrant household with a single mom, I saw the struggles and sacrifices my mother made to provide for us. Her determination motivated me to work hard in school and strive for a better future through education. Being a first-generation Asian American and college-going student means that I am establishing an example for my younger sister and setting a pathway for my family. I want to pursue a higher education to better myself and open doors for my family who were never able to do so for themselves. I have contacted the university to appeal my aid, but they informed me that there is nothing more they can offer me.
At this point, I know that without help, I won't be able to start my undergraduate studies and fulfill my dream of attending college. According to Forbes’ “Top College in America,” Binghamton is ranked as the #1 public university in New York, and attending a school of this caliber would be life-changing for me. Having exhausted all other scholarship opportunities and resources, I'm turning to my incredible community to lend support as I take this monumental step forward. Whether it's a contribution or sharing my story, your support means the world to me. Thank you.
