Hey Everyone,
My name is Jordan Mitchell and I am in my last years of my Masters Program at University of Southern California getting a M.M in Contemporary Teaching Practices K-12. The COVID pandemic has made teaching and learning incredibly difficult. I am no longer able to sustain the costs of my education, or my housing in Los Angeles, and I have to move out by the end of the month.
When I arrived in Fall 2019, I was informed that the other members of my cohort had dropped out and that my major would be discontinued once I graduated. For this reason, the university barely supported me my first year, and unfortunately I have not received any financial support from my program during my second year. This has left me in about 1700 in debt for tuition and classes that consistently conflict with my teaching schedule.
I’ve reached out asking for numerous resources regarding my situation, but no sustainable methods have worked in keeping me in LA. USC expects me to undergo student teaching full-time during pandemic while providing no funds for me to be able to spend this much time finishing these classes to the best of my ability.
I have been struggling to support myself in LA thus I am moving and asking friends and family if you can help me secure my living situations by the end of November in which I will be moving to San Jose while trying to pay USC tuition.
It has been extremely stressful these past few months, with little help from the university, being a first generation black man in academia is frustrating especially in a major that will soon be discontinued. My dream is to be a successful music teach who can open up a music center in my hometown of Stockton, CA for students of color in disenfranchised communities. Any contributions to helping me leave LA and secure housing and school cost back into Northern California would be great!
