Dearest friends and family,
I am reaching out on behalf of one of my good friends from university. I am keeping her identity anonymous on her request– however, if you would like to discuss any of this with me to know more, please reach out:)
My friend is one of the hardest working people I know. She is a first-generation college student from a developing country and has been working multiple jobs this semester to support herself through university. All her earned income goes to pay her tuition, loans and living expenses. I have watched her choose work or study over fun time and time again, and I can see that she deeply cares about her education. She is studying computer science. Her dream is to be financially secure enough post-graduation to be able to call her father and tell him he doesn’t have to work overtime (often more than 12 hours a day) to make ends meet for her family back home.
As many of you know, university these days is heavily reliant on technology– everything I do for school is on my laptop. A few months ago, my friend’s laptop started falling apart– literally. While the rest of us could go outside our rooms to work and take class, (would go off to co-working spaces and coffee shops), she had to stay in her room every day because her laptop would break if she moved it. Last week, her laptop stopped working altogether. Our university lent her a laptop temporarily, but in the meantime, she is frantically trying to find ways to finance a new one while paying for tuition, loans, living, health and flight expenses.
I am relieved that she has the courage to ask for help– something not easy for any of us, especially a young girl from a developing country who is trying to prove she deserves to be educated. I know this is something she will pay forward a thousand times in her future.
Please, I am asking you to donate and help my friend finish her last 1.5 years of university.
