My name is Fatima Akter, and I was born in Bangladesh and then moved to the US with my family with dreams for a better future for me and my siblings. I am currently a student at the University of Massachusetts Boston. I plan to study in Amman, Jordan, in the Fall of 2024. As a rising senior at the University of Massachusetts Boston, I've always wanted to study another language and immerse myself in a different culture. As a first-generation student, I manage my own tuition and work full-time while pursuing my studies. With immigrant parents, my parents have taught me to focus primarily on work and school, leaving little time to fully explore my academic interests and passions.
I am eager to participate in the SIT program in Jordan this Fall, which offers tuition credits and internship opportunities. This program will allow me to advance my Arabic skills, which are crucial for my future career in government, especially in diplomacy within Muslim countries. Over the past 1.5 years, I have been studying Arabic at my university, and this immersion experience will be invaluable in enhancing my language proficiency.
However, the $26,000 for the semester is a significant challenge. Despite scholarships and savings, I must submit $12,000 upfront by the 28th of August, excluding additional expenses such as flight and everyday costs. The first payment is due August 14th, and the last payment is due on the 28th before I depart. I have received the Gilman Scholarship, which will support me during my study abroad and help me when I return with the job search.

I would deeply appreciate any contribution towards this goal. Thank you in advance for your consideration and support.
Sincerely,
Fatima Akter
