Matt is a career Fire Apparatus Engineer for CAL FIRE/South Lake County Fire in the Sonoma, Lake, Napa Unit. Recently we received a hand written letter from a victim of the Camp Fire in Paradise, who tracked Matt and his crew down. The letter described heroic efforts and appreciation. After New Years Eve 2018, I can truly say that Matt has become a hero to all of us.
Matt suffered a critical traumatic injury to his left hand shortly after midnight on New Years Eve in an off duty accident. Matt was transported to Mercy in Redding and several hours later flown by a Medical Airplane from Redding to San Francisco Airport. From SFO, Matt was taken to the CPMC Davies Medical Center, A leader in Microsurgery and Vascular Repair. Matt went into Emergency Surgery shortly after arrival. After 5 hours of hard work from a dedicated team of microsurgeons, Matt was in the first stage of recovery.
Matt's injuries were so severe, the surgeons were only able to save his index and pinky finger. Multiple Fractures and Dislocations to Matt's hand were also discovered and repaired with pins and rods. Matt Also has major hearing loss in his left ear, as well as burns to the Face, Head, and Chest. His positive outlook and contagious laugh still remain intact.
Matt still needs several more surgeries, including transplanting his big toe to his left thumb, which will allow him to grip and grasp items. Matt will remain in San Francisco for the next 4 weeks. Having his Mother Jamie at his side during this time is essential to his recovery.
This is a rare opportunity for us to give back to Matt and his Family in their time of need, just as Matt has given to his friends, family, and complete strangers in their times of need.
Matt's recovery is going to be a long road with lots of ups and downs. Worrying about financial burdens does not have to be one of those downs. Lets all band together and take care of Matty!
