Help find the Black-throated Finch in NSW and surrounds
The Black-throated Finch has become famous for all the wrong reasons over the years, particularly with certain coal mining developments in central QLD. But in NSW, things are even worse!
The Black-throated Finch was listed as “Presumed Extinct” by the NSW government as recent as 2016. But we are not convinced, and this amazing little bird needs your help!
The last confirmed sighting in NSW was at Pindarri Dam, near Ashford in 1994. However, widespread searches in the Inverell-Ashford-Tenterfield area in Spring 2000 failed to find any trace of this cute finch.
What can you do?
For the next few months, we are asking you to help search for this little bird. It is believed that loss of native grasses through habitat degradation was the reason this bird has declined. Over the years, there have been numerous unconfirmed sightings, and with better than ever seasons for native grasses over the last few years, now is the time to search again.
We even have a project established in INaturalist (an application on your smart phone or online) so you can easily lodge your sightings and photographs to us!
What if I am unable to help search?
We are asking for donations through this GoFundMe to help support project expenses, including the purchase of motion-activated cameras and other resources which we can establish at key locations. Your donation will help across our wide search area.
