Sage Adams and his father, Keith Adams, were camping and Kayaking on the Skagit River on Tuesday evening. While navigating the river, Keith capsized in rapids around 6:00 p.m. and eventually was able to swim to shore. Sage continued down the river and was still in the kayak when last seen. Keith swam to shore and in the process lost his life vest, shoes, and socks. There was no road in sight and Keith could not find his son.
Adams hiked all Tuesday night and Wednesday morning searching for his son and calling for help until finally he found a store in Marblemount around 10:40 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Keith call 911 to report his son missing. Search and Rescue Teams arrived in the area before noon and have been searching for Sage ever since.
During the course of the day on Wednesday, Sage’s Kayak was found about 500 yards north of the Marblemount Bridge, on the East side of the river. There was no sign of him, his oar or his life jacket. The fathers Kayak and life jacket were both found by searchers as well.
A Search and Rescue K-9 Team located a scent on Wednesday that led them to a rocky area, but the search was suspended until morning for safety reasons, according to the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office.
The K-9 Search team resumed searching on Thursday morning in the area where the scent was located while other Search and Rescue crews began searching from the opposite side of the area to cover more ground.
The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office is using drones to assist in the search as well as Marine Units from the Sheriff’s Office and Marine Units from the North Cascade National Park. A Search and Rescue helicopter from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and a helicopter from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection have been providing in aerial support in the search. A specialized Wilderness Tracking Team out of Snohomish County, as well as Search and Rescue crews from multiple surrounding counties including six dog teams and around 50 searchers are assisting in the ground search for the missing boy. The Sheriff’s Office said the public’s help is not currently needed to aid in the search and public searchers could actually hinder the K-9 efforts to locate Sage.
The Sheriff’s Office said there is a strong, heavy current in the Skagit River right now and the water is very cold. Search and Rescue crews may ask Seattle City Light, which operates the Diablo Dam, to lower the river to aid in search efforts.
Additional Updates will be provided as they become available.
