Austin Carey went missing the afternoon of Thursday, June 18th. He was last seen attempting to swim across the Snake River on the upstream part of Pillar Falls after safely completing a BASE jump. His jumping partner successfully crossed the river and waited on the other side for him. A kayaker then brought Austin’s gear across the river and gave it to his partner, telling him that Austin would be swimming across and didn’t want to get his gear wet. Austin has not been seen or heard from since.
Search and Rescue was called and they began their search on Thursday night. Friday morning they continued searching by boat and drone. Sergeant McRoberts, who is in charge of the search, placed a call to the Bureau of Reclamation to shut down the Dam. Unfortunately, due to ongoing construction, they cannot divert additional water so that a team can safely search below the falls. The search was called off Friday, late morning.
We are asking for money to help pay for costs associated with the rescue, in hopes of continuing the rescue, and getting the construction to pause long enough so that a search can occur under the falls. Normally, shutting down the dam is not an issue but with the construction, the Bureau of Reclamation has yet to agree.
Austin is the most sweet and good-hearted person I have ever met. He always has a smile on his face and is the best friend anyone could ask for. Whoever was fortunate enough to cross his path knows how he always makes sure to show his love. Every little bit helps to find Austin and bring his family peace!
