Nico is one of my best friend's, soon to be 13 years old son, from Arizona who has been fighting an unknown form of inoperable, terminal brain cancer for 3 years. No biospy can even be taken due to the risks it brings. And due to this there are no trials that he would qualify for. Ever since that dreadful day they found out he had cancer, the family has been unable to get on their feet as the system has completely failed them time and time again.
Now, just days before his 13th birthday & just weeks before Christmas, the family has found out that they will be kicked out of their house at the end of the year & are currently unable to find another place due to the inability to further pay a month's worth of rent.
While Tiffany works herself overboard on a daily bases to provide for her children, the fact is, a child with cancer destroys you in more ways than one. It's not just the child's health, it's absolutely everything except maybe for the love they share.
In the midst of all this, finally, after years and years of fighting to get Nico to a children's hospital, on the East Coast, in the hopes of finally (maybe) receiving the care he needs and hopefully finding an answer - they've finally received a promising call that could get them there. But, due to trickle down effect of childhood cancer, which is beyond finances, Tiffany can't even begin to start getting him there. In a sense, we are the only ones that can help Nico and his family.
Tiffany has a hard time reaching out and asking for help after being turned on numerous times by people who thought they knew what it would be like to actually be there for a child with cancer. It's not easy, so they leave, because they don't know what else to do. So, that's where we, as friends; as family; and as a community come together to help. Because, not only would we be helping the family in the NOW, but by getting Nico to the East Coast, we could literally be saving his life.
