This is the photo of Zohra (26), Zahra (25), and Mariam (22), from Jaghori, Afghanistan, who face incredible hardships and their only financial supporter is about to be imprisoned.
If they were born in any other country, I would not have created this page. But in Afghanistan, they are considered disabled, because of their short height. Besides, they belong to the Hazara Shia ethnicity in Afghanistan that has long been socially and politically discriminated against. Zohra, Zahra, and Mariam have tried everywhere to get a job, but in return, they have received shame, discrimination, and pity, at best.
Their financial support came onlyfromMurtaza, their brother. They have lost their father who died from chronic. Murtaza was unable to find any job because of the extreme poverty and lack of employment in Kabul, so he was forced to become an apprentice for a truck driver who traveled to remote and lawless parts of the country. In 2018, criminals kidnapped Murtaza and asked for $25,000 US dollars (approximately £18,300) as ransom.
To pay for the ransom, their aunt Marzia Jafari used her savings and sold their valuables and borrowed additional $15,000 from bank and private lenders. All she could think of at the time was the safety of Murtaza. They finally paid the ransom and Murtaza returned home. Criminals killed one of the other captives whose family couldn’t pay the ransom. At the time of his captivity, Murtaza was tortured and subjected to unspeakable assaults which has affected his mental health severely. He is left with the trauma and the thought of finding another similar job scares him to the core.
Today their aunt, Marzia Jafari, is the only financial supporter. But because her teaching job is only enough for their daily expenses, she hasn’t been able to pay back the bank and the other lenders. She needs $15,000 American dollars to pay off all her debts before the interest adds more to it. She has been ordered by the police to either return the money in full or face prison. The university where she teaches has threatened her that this brings disrepute to the institution so she should either solve the problem or risk losing her job. Without the repayment of the loans, Zohra, Zahra, and Mariam will lose their only support.
