There are souls who choose to inhabit the world with their hearts, leaving silent traces of care wherever they pass. My dear friend Patrizia Giffoni is one of them. For years, she has crossed borders, bringing her voice and her empathy to where pain seemed to have no words. As a psychologist, she has offered her whole self in war zones and disaster zones, in forgotten corners of the world, relieving invisible pains and healing bitter wounds, helping regain breath to those who had lost it, sowing small beginnings where everything seemed to end.

My name is Adriana Blanc, I am sharing this fund raiser with all of you my dear friends, whom I´ve had the blessing to meet in several parts of the world while following my husband Luis throughout his career. Patri will share with all the friends she´s made throughout her very long, international career.

I met Patrizia in 2004 in Damascus, Syria, at my 40th birthday celebration. She was then and always has been the life of the party. She is the driving force behind our “Damascus Gang” annual reunions.

While in Damascus, Patrizia was working for an organization called “Movimondo”, which supported the juvenile justice system in Syria and collaborated with UNICEF to promote the development of child protection policies within the education, health, social and juvenile justice systems.

She worked for Iraqi refugees and Palestinian refugees escaping Iraq that got stuck in the no man’s land between Iraq and Syria.

She has been working as a psychosocial expert for more than 20 years, particularly in the field of child protection and women´s protection against violence, in the whole Middle East, East and West Africa, Central and South East Asia. She worked for Care USA as a psychosocial advisor in Jordan, to support the Iraqi refugees; for IRC in Jordan, in the Philippines and in Lebanon, as GBV and Child protection expert; as a psychotherapist in Kenya and in the Philippines for the Center for Victims of Torture, providing psychosocial counseling to refugees, to survivors of torture and war trauma, and building the capacities of personnel in communities affected by violence. She worked with Medica Mondiale in Liberia, also as a psychosocial advisor and trainer in programs aiming to end violence against women.

Patrizia also worked in several humanitarian programs for the Danish Red Cross as a Regional Psychosocial Delegate for Asia, in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Singapore and Cambodia.

Patrizia´s words:

“In January 2023, I was diagnosed with two different types of cancer. Precisely, I had ovarian and endometrium cancer, stage four. In February 2023, I had surgery to remove my ovaries and uterus, (total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy).

I have done different types of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, nevertheless, after one year I had relapses with several metastases in different parts of my body.

Last year I started and currently continue to have alternative treatments: With Dr. Margherita Luongo, president of the Amor Foundation, an association of voluntary doctors dedicated to research and oxygen-ozone therapy for the free treatment of cancer.

Through them I have received ozone therapy and the prescription of natural supplements for reducing the metastases, improving the immune system and the general psychophysical wellbeing.

With Dr. Ivano Hammarberg Ferri : supplements for gut microbiota care and for strengthening the immune system.

These two types of alternative treatments gave me a lot of relief, I feel physically very strong.

Unfortunately, these treatments are not covered by the Italian National Health System.

Last year in June, for two weeks, I was treated with Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), by Dr. Alessandro Fanelli at Ecomedica, a private health clinic. This treatment was financially covered by the Italian National Health system.

Since last year, the illness has worsened, more metastases spread out in other parts of my body, even though all the metastasis that were previously treated with SBRT have healed.

The metastases, except for those in the lungs, did not touch any other vital organs, however few of them are in a very sensitive area called mediastinum, and involved also several lymph nodes above and below the diaphragm.

Given the actual situation, against the will of some oncologists and with the support of other oncologists, like Dr. Massimo Lombardi, Dr. Alessandro Fanelli, who treated me with SBRT last year, proposed a new cycle of treatments. I truly trust him, so, supported by Adri and another dear friend Ljuba, I decided to do the treatment, but this time the national health system will only cover one third of the cost of the therapy.”

Today, Patrizia is the one who faces a very difficult condition. A serious illness, requiring strength, time, and expensive treatments. Treatments that, unfortunately, are not completely covered by the National Health System, so they are not totally refundable. A burden that should not be carried alone. And so, here we are, doing what she did for so many: BEING THERE FOR HER. Not with dramatic gestures, but with a true, intertwined, human presence. This fundraising is much more than financial support: it's a way to give back a little of the good she's spread throughout the world. It's a thread that unites us, it's a "we see you, we care about you, we won't abandon you."

If you can donate, please do. Even a small amount, even in silence. Every gesture is a shared step. If you want, take this story further, so that it can reach where it can find other hands, other hearts. Let's make sure Patrizia isn't alone, especially now that the path becomes steeper. Let's make sure that a little of what she gave comes back to her, transformed into strength, possibility, hope.

Patrizia is also part of and supported by a very active voluntary based association in her hometown San Severo called Esserci Odv, which means being present, being there. It supports cancer patients and survivors, with different kinds of valuable and professional free support activities (workshops on different topics, acupuncture, reiki, physiotherapy and aestetic treatments); it is a large group of joyful, lively, coherent, generous people and professionals.

Supporta Patrizia Giffoni nel finanziamento del trattamento con Radioterapia Stereotassica (SBRT)

Ci sono anime che scelgono di abitare il mondo con il cuore, lasciando tracce silenziose di cura ovunque passino. La mia cara amica Patrizia Giffoni è una di loro. Per anni ha attraversato confini, portando la sua voce e il suo ascolto dove il dolore sembrava non avere parole. Come psicologa, ha offerto tutta se stessa in zone di guerra e di calamità, in angoli dimenticati del mondo, alleviando dolori invisibili e curando ferite profonde, aiutando a ritrovare il respiro a chi lo aveva perso, seminando piccoli inizi dove tutto sembrava finire.

Mi chiamo Adriana Blanc, condivido questa raccolta fondi con tutti voi, miei cari amici, che ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare in diverse parti del mondo mentre seguivo mio marito Luis nel corso della sua carriera. Patri condividerà questo momento con le persone che ha incontrato nel suo cammino.

Ho conosciuto Patrizia nel 2004 a Damasco, in Siria, alla festa per il mio quarantesimo compleanno. Allora era, e lo è sempre stata, l’anima della festa. È lei la forza trainante delle nostre riunioni annuali della “Damascus Gang”.

Mentre era a Damasco, Patrizia lavorava per un’organizzazione chiamata “Movimondo”, che sosteneva il sistema di giustizia minorile in Siria e collaborava con l’UNICEF per promuovere lo sviluppo di politiche di Tutela dei Diritti dell’Infanzia e dell’Adolescenza all’interno dei sistemi educativo, sanitario, sociale e di giustizia minorile.

Ha lavorato a favore dei rifugiati iracheni e dei profughi palestinesi provenienti dall’Iraq che erano rimasti bloccati nella terra di nessuno tra Iraq e Siria. (Guarda il video pubblicato su YouTube).

Patrizia ha lavorato come esperta psicosociale per piu di 20 anni in tutto il Medio Oriente, in Africa Orientale e Occidentale, nel Centro e Sud Est Asiatico, nel campo della tutela dei diritti dell'ínfanzia e dell´adolescenza e della tutela dei diritti delle donne, specificamente in programmi tesi a combattere la violenza. Patrizia ha lavorato per Care USA, come consulente psicosociale in Giordania per supportare i profughi Iracheni; per IRC in Giordania, Libano e Filippine, come esperta sulla violenza di genere e sulla tutela dei diritti dei minori; come psicoterapeuta in Kenya e nelle Filippine per il Center for Victims of Torture, offrendo counseling psicologico alle persone sopravvissute a torture, violenze e esperienze di guerra traumatizzanti, e formando personale nelle comunità affette da violenze e conflitti.

Ha lavorato con Medica Mondiale in Liberia come esperta psicosociale e formatrice, in programmi per combattere la violenza contro le donne. Patrizia ha lavorato anche in diversi programmi umanitari di emergenza per la Croce Rossa Danese, come delegata regionale psicosociale per l'Asia, in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Singapore e Cambogia.

Le parole di Patrizia:

"Nel gennaio 2023 mi sono stati diagnosticati due diversi tipi di tumore. Nello specifico, avevo un tumore ad un ovaio e uno all’endometrio, al IV stadio.

Nel febbraio 2023 mi sono sottoposta all’intervento chirurgico e mi sono state asportate le ovaie e l’utero (isterectomia totale con annessiectomia bilaterale). Successivamente mi hanno curata con diversi tipi di chemioterapia e immunoterapia, tuttavia, dopo un anno ho avuto delle recidive con diverse metastasi in varie parti del corpo.

L'anno scorso ho iniziato e attualmente continuo a seguire dei trattamenti alternativi:

Con la Fondazione Amor, associazione di medici volontari che si occupa di ricerca e ossigeno-ozono nella terapia gratuita di malattie oncologiche, presieduta dalla dottoressa Margherita Luongo: trattamenti di ozono-terapia e prescrizione di integratori naturali per ridurre le metastasi, rafforzare il sistema immunitario e migliorare il benessere psicofisico generale.

Con il dottor Ivano Hammarberg Ferri: integratori per la cura del microbiota intestinale e per rinforzare il sistema immunitario.

Questi due tipi di trattamento mi hanno dato molto sollievo, mi sento fisicamente molto forte. Purtroppo, questi trattamenti non sono coperti dal Servizio Sanitario Nazionale Italiano.

Lo scorso giugno per due settimane mi sono sottoposta a una radioterapia stereotassica corporea (SBRT), effettuata dal dottor Alessandro Fanelli presso Ecomedica, una clinica privata.

Il costo di questo trattamento è stato coperto dal Servizio Sanitario Nazionale italiano.

Dallo scorso anno la malattia è peggiorata e si sono diffuse altre metastasi in altre parti del mio corpo; tuttavia, tutte le metastasi precedentemente trattate con la SBRT sono in risposta e non sono attive.

Le metastasi, ad eccezione di quelle ai polmoni, non hanno colpito nessun altro organo vitale; ciononostante, alcune si trovano in un'area molto delicata chiamata mediastino e altre hanno interessato linfonodi addominali sovra e sotto diaframmatici.

Data la situazione attuale, contro il parere di alcuni oncologi e con il sostegno di altri, come ad esempio il dottor Massimo Lombardi, il dottor Alessandro Fanelli ha proposto un nuovo ciclo di trattamenti. Ho piena fiducia in lui, quindi con il supporto di Adri e un’altra carissima amica, Ljuba, ho deciso di sottopormi al trattamento, ma questa volta il servizio sanitario nazionale non coprirà l'intero costo della terapia”

Oggi è Patrizia a trovarsi ad affrontare una situazione molto difficile. Una malattia grave, che richiede forza, tempo e cure costose. Cure che, purtroppo, non sono completamente coperte dal Servizio Sanitario Nazionale e quindi non sono interamente rimborsabili. Un peso che non dovrebbe essere portato da sola. Ed ecco perché siamo qui, a fare ciò che lei ha fatto per tanti: ESSERE AL SUO FIANCO. Non con gesti spettacolari, ma con una presenza umana autentica e solidale. Questa raccolta fondi è molto più di un semplice sostegno economico: è un modo per restituire un po’ del bene che lei ha diffuso in tutto il mondo. È un filo che ci unisce, è un «ti vediamo, ci teniamo a te, non ti abbandoneremo».

Se puoi permetterlo ti chiedo di fare una donazione. Anche una piccola somma, anche in silenzio. Ogni gesto è un passo condiviso. Se volete, portate avanti e inoltrate questa storia, affinché possa arrivare dove possa trovare altre mani, altri cuori.

Facciamo in modo che Patrizia non sia sola, soprattutto ora che il sentiero si fa più ripido. Facciamo in modo che un po’ di ciò che ha dato le torni indietro, trasformato in forza, possibilità e speranza. Grazie a tutti voi, con una gratitudine che non si misura solo in termini di denaro.

Patrizia fa anche parte di un'associazione di volontariato della sua città natale, San Severo, chiamata ESSERCI Odv, e ne riceve sostegno.

L'associazione offre supporto ai malati di cancro e ai caregivers attraverso diversi tipi di attività (seminari su molti argomenti, corsi di formazione, agopuntura, reiki, trattamenti fisioterapici ed terapie estetiche, etc.); è un grande gruppo di persone e professionisti preparati, gioiosi, vivaci, coesi e generosi.
