We write to you with urgency and hope to share the story of Filmon Fisehaye Habtom — a 31-year-old husband, father, and dedicated teacher from Eritrea — who is facing a life-threatening medical crisis.

Filmon’s Health Condition

Last year, Filmon suffered a sudden seizure and was subsequently diagnosed with a large, critical brain meningioma. His condition includes:

• A large right-sided meningioma (6.6 x 5.3 x 7.0 cm) causing significant mass effect

• Focal seizures accompanied by left-sided paralysis

Doctors at the Mater Private Hospital In Australia have urgently recommended the following treatment plan:

• Craniotomy with complete tumour resection

• Hospital admission for 3–5 days post-surgery

• Minimum 10-day no-fly period following surgery

• Two-week recovery stay in Australia

Without immediate surgical intervention, Filmon’s condition is expected to deteriorate rapidly and could become fatal within weeks.

‍‍ Who Is Filmon?

Filmon is a loving husband to his wife, Merry, and a devoted father to their two-year-old son, Mibhar. He has spent his career as a teacher in Asmara, Eritrea, shaping the lives of countless students. After years of national service, both Filmon and Merry lack the financial means to afford the urgent surgery he now desperately needs. His extended family, though supportive, are also unable to contribute significantly. Merry and Mibhar currently reside in Eritrea.

Why We Are Fundraising

Due to the lack of advanced neurosurgical hospital in Eritrea, Filmon was granted permission to seek treatment abroad. In July 2025, he consulted with neurosurgeons at Mater Private Hospital in Australia, who strongly recommended immediate surgery.

The total cost for surgery, hospital care, and travel is approximately AUD $86,895.00 (USD ~$55,899.00) (20 August, 2025) — far beyond what Filmon’s family can manage alone.

Note: BCNC and Mater Hospital have advised securing contingency funds in case Filmon requires an extended hospital stay post-surgery. Additional nightly costs are as follows:

• Ward: $1,815 + $100 (pharmacy)

• ICU: $5,745 + $100 (pharmacy)

What Has Been Contributed So Far

So far dedicated family members and friends already covered $38,184.30 (AUD) that is paid to the Mater Hospital (hospital and medical care). Now the campaign target is to raise the $48,710.70 AUD for the purposes mentioned above.
