Help Fiji Schools secure freshwater

Donation protected
We are travelling as a large group of Business owners from all over Australia and New Zealand to attend a conference in Fiji. The business owners are all a part of the Think water franchise network of privately owned operations that specialise in designing, supplying and installing solutions for all water users. We felt that while being in a beautiful part of the world we would like to help the local disadvantaged communities in some way. So for us the type of charity work was an easy one due to our expertise. The hard part was working out for who or which group in the community we would assist. We chose schools and children because they are exposed to situations that are beyond their control, they are the vulnerable. This fund raising event is aimed at providing a secure, clean & safe water drinking supply to two schools in Fiji. The schools are located approx 30 - 45 minutes away from Nandi in the regional country side of Fiji.

The schools that Think water will be providing this aid to are:

1) Ratu Ilaisa Primary School ( near Semo Village): They have 109 students & 8 teachers. Their current water situation is 2 x Water tanks. There is also a water line from a small Dam; which is shared by the village. However, pressure is poor and clean water is limited from this source.

Proposed solutions:

a) Rain catchment is hardly being used so the proposals for this school is to repair / replace guttering on large buildings and feed into the rain water into the storage tanks. The tanks will need to be repaired and reinstalled.

b) The second proposal is to install a solar pump at the river and treat the water prior to it being pumped into existing Rain water storage tanks as a back up when rain water is scarce.

2) Nadroumai Primary School: They have 110 students & 7 teachers and students board onsite for the week. Their current water situation is an unreliable mains water source from the local authority that can be cut off for weeks on end. When water runs out or is cut off there is a bore on site to fill the storage tanks. However as electrical supply is extremely intermittent this is an unreliable source. Close by is also a stream where the children will bathe and get drinking water if they run out of the other water supply options.

Proposed solutions:

a) To supply a small petrol generator to be mounted in the shed that houses the bore pump. This will remove the issue of intermittent electrical power supply. We will install a roof exhaust to ensure exhaust does not contaminate the shed and bore. If there is a power cut the generator can be started to run the pump.

b) The current bore pump would be removed and a solar bore pump will be installed. This pump will be able to run from solar power from solar panels mounted on the roof of the school or the supplied power. The pump would be operated manually by the head teacher as the current pump currently is.

c) Repair the rainwater tanks and guttering for extra water storage of drinking water. This will require replacement of the fittings in the both the current water tanks at the entry of the school and repair of the roof guttering. Both tanks will be cleaned and fitted with taps for drinking water.

Timing:

Our conference is in Early August 2018 (5th-9th Aug). Therefore we will be spending the coming months raising as much capital as we can to carry out as much of the above works as possible. For any of the works that cannot be completed within our conference period we will donate the balance of the funds towards the schools in equal portions.
