Accommodations don't fix dyslexia. Remediation does.

For years, a Massachusetts family was told their child's dyslexia could be managed. Extra time. Audiobooks. A reader. An aide in the classroom.

Those are real supports, and they matter. But no one told this family the thing that mattered most: accommodations help a child work around dyslexia. They do not teach a child to read.

After years in that program, the child's reading sat at the 6th percentile. An aide read everything aloud — every passage, every assignment, every test. The child could finish the work. The child could not read a word of it independently.

So the parents found a specialized, evidence-based reading program and paid for it themselves.

It worked. The reading composite climbed to the 15th percentile, with documented gains in accuracy, fluency, and comprehension across three testing periods. Given actual instruction, this child learned to read.

Then the system said no.

The family asked their district to reimburse what they had spent. After a five-day hearing with expert testimony, reimbursement was denied.

That denial is now being appealed to federal district court.

Why this case matters.

This appeal asks a question that reaches far past one family: when a child with severe dyslexia still cannot read independently after years of services, is a program built on reading aloud to that child designed to ever teach them to read?

Accommodation helps a child get through the material. Remediation teaches the child to read. This appeal asks what federal law requires when a program only ever does the first thing.

The family has retained an attorney and must file in federal district court by September 13, 2026. That deadline cannot be extended.

Finding a lawyer willing to take a federal special education appeal is the hurdle most families never clear. This family cleared it. But representation isn't free, and after years of paying private tuition out of pocket, they have very little left.
