March 23, 2017 was the happiest day of Amanda's life, she gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby boy and she couldn't wait to get home and start living her life as a family of three. This pure happiness and love that Amanda was experiencing soon turned into terror and the worst days of her life as she fell very ill very quick. Not knowing why she was in kidney failure, doctors started her on dialysis and blood transfusions. After what seemed like thousands of pokes, tests, and many days spent in ICU we finally got a diagnosis; Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS)
Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS): is an extremely rare, life-threatening, progressive disease that frequently has a genetic component. In most cases it is often caused by chronic, uncontrolled activation of the complement system, a branch of the body immune system that destroys and removes foreign praticles.
Labor and giving birth to her beautiful baby boy is what caused the onset of this ugly disease. The good news was there is a drug called Soliris that she could have to help save her life, after just a few infusions Amanda started to re gain strength. She felt alive again! This is a miracle drug that has kept Amanda alive and well for the past nine months. She has got this infusion every fourteen days since she was diagnosed.
Now, with it being a new year Amanda's insurance company is wanting to deny her of Soliris, the one thing that can keep her alive. This is a very expensive medication, and she desperately needs the help to get a infusion or two while insurance is being worked out, she can't go more than sixteen days without this infusion or she will start to relapse.
