Hi. My name is Olapeju Adelowo. I am a nurse and I have great passion for prevention and management of diabetes and reducing the complications that arise from living with diabetes.

In many parts of Africa, living with diabetes is not just a health challenge, it’s a daily fight for survival.

Grace is a 42-year-old mother of three from Ibadan, Nigeria. She was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes three years ago. At first, she thought it would be manageable — just a few lifestyle changes and medications.
But soon, reality set in. The nearest clinic that offers regular blood sugar checks is 15 kilometers away, and a single blood glucose test costs almost as much as her family’s daily meal. A small box of test strips — something easily bought in pharmacies in Europe or the U.S. costs more than ₦15,000 ($10–$12), while her monthly income is barely ₦30,000 ($20). For most patients like Grace, these tools are a luxury.

Without testing kits, Grace must rely on “how she feels” to judge her blood sugar levels, a dangerous guess that can lead to complications. Last year, she was hospitalized after slipping into diabetic ketoacidosis, a severe, life-threatening condition that could have been prevented with proper monitoring.

Now, Grace lives with constant anxiety. She worries about her health, about being a burden to her children, and about whether she can afford her next dose of insulin.

Grace’s story is far from unique. Across Nigeria and Ghana, millions live with diabetes — many without even knowing it. According to the International Diabetes Federation, over 24 million adults in Africa are living with diabetes, and this number is projected to double in the next decade.

Yet access to basic care remains heartbreakingly limited:
• Fewer than 30% of diagnosed patients have access to regular glucose monitoring.
• Insulin is often three to five times more expensive than in developed countries.
• Many rural clinics lack even a single functioning glucometer.
• Education about proper diabetes management is almost nonexistent in low-income communities.

Because of this, Africa has one of the highest rates of diabetes complications in the world including blindness, kidney failure, amputations, and premature deaths.

Yet, there is hope.. Through collective effort and compassion, we can change this story.

With your support, we aim to provide:
• Free blood glucose meters and test strips to patients who cannot afford them ( low-income diabetic patients, children, or rural communities)
• Educational outreach on diet, exercise, and self-care.
• Support for those with longstanding diabetes complications.

Every contribution, no matter how small will help someone like Grace live a longer, healthier, and happier life.
Because managing diabetes should never be a privilege; it should be a basic human right.
Your donation will not only buy test strips or insulin; it will buy peace of mind for mothers, fathers, and children who want nothing more than a chance to live.

Let’s rewrite the story of diabetes in Africa. One life at a time.
