Hi, my name is Jesse Chavarria, and I'm organizing this fundraiser on behalf of my international graduate student, Fernando Chacon.
Fernando is a talented and dedicated student who is beginning his second year of graduate training to become a clinical psychologist. His passion is to understand and help individuals struggling with alcohol and other addictive disorders. In addition to being an outstanding student, Fernando is a loving husband who is now facing an incredibly difficult road ahead.
Recently, Fernando's wife, Stefanny, suffered a stroke. She is expected to remain in the hospital for several weeks, followed by extensive rehabilitation to regain her physical functioning.
This unexpected crisis has turned their world upside down. As an international student from El Salvador, Fernando and Stefanny have no family in Canada. They are working on obtaining a visa so a family member can come to assist with Stefanny's recovery. However, this will add to their financial strain, as Fernando and Stefanny will need to cover the costs of supporting an additional family member during this difficult situation.
Currently, they are relying on Fernando's modest student stipend -- which he cannot supplement due to his student status. With medical recovery needs, the cost of daily living, transportation to rehabilitation and medical appointments, and the added expenses of supporting family who come to help, the financial burden is overwhelming.
We have set a goal of $24,000 to help Fernando and Stefanny cover the following anticipated expenses over the coming year:
- Transportation costs ($6,000): Taxi and rideshare expenses for regular trips to and from rehabilitation and medical appointments.
- Groceries and household needs ($9,000): Monthly food and essential living expenses for Fernando, Stefanny, and a visiting family caregiver.
- Utilities and housing support ($3,000): Covering rent-related bills, electricity, internet, and other basic necessities.
- Family caregiver support ($4,000): Costs associated with bringing a family member from El Salvador (visa fees, travel expenses, and additional living costs while assisting in Stefanny's recovery).
- Unexpected expenses ($2,000): Emergency costs, medical supplies, or other needs that arise during Stefanny's rehabilitation.
Your generosity will allow Fernando and Stefanny to focus fully on Stefanny's recovery, while also ensuring Fernando can continue pursuing his graduate training to become a clinical psychologist.
Every donation — no matter the size — will make a meaningful difference. If you cannot donate, please consider sharing this campaign with your networks.
On behalf of Fernando and Stefanny, thank you for your generosity, love, and kindness.
With gratitude,
Jesse
