Help support a Permaculture Education Project in a remote, food insecure Kenyan community

Felix Odumo Akicho is a permaculture farmer and teacher from a remote community in Homa Bay County, Kenya. He runs the Kakayando Organic farm  , which aims to eradicate poverty through sustainable food production using permaculture. Food insecurity is a chronic problem in this part of East Africa, and Felix has been able to provide free food to his neighbours since the farm was founded in 2018.

After a hard day’s work on the farm, Felix walks to the surrounding villages to teach his neighbours how to grow healthy food for their families. He believes that helping people learn to grow their own food is an important part of eliminating poverty. Permaculture teaches us how to learn from nature to build resilient systems, which is especially important for communities most vulnerable to climate change in Africa.

About Kakayando Permaculture Education Project

The objective of our campaign is to bring permaculture education to small farmers in the Kawiya community in Kenya, whose relative isolation and changing weather patterns are a constant challenge.

We will do this by expanding the reach of the Kakayando Organic Farm education project – developing a building where teaching can take place on site, a toilet block to prevent the perennial problem of Cholera and other water-borne diseases, and buying a motorbike so we can reach more outlying villages.

What we are fundraising for

Our priority need is for a Permaculture Centre building and adjacent toilet block to enhance easier study and share permaculture techniques with food insecure small farmers in the area, particularly during the rainy season. This project will help over 500 people in the community and their families. The materials needed for this include iron sheets, bricks, sand, cement, a water tank and pipes, labour charges and transport of materials to site, plus sundry items like chairs and tables for study.

Adjacent to the Permaculture Centre we will need to build a compost toilet block with running water to enable permaculture students to use the facilities whist preventing the spread of Cholera and other water-borne diseases endemic to the area.

Cost of Permaculture building and toilet block: £2000
(breakdown available on request from Felix, whose contact details are at the bottom of the page).

We are also raising funds to buy a motorbike, so that Felix can do further education outreach work in a larger area. A motorbike would also mean easier access to medical and veterinary care, as these are situated some distance away. Felix estimates that he would be able to reach an additional 20+ communities with a motorbike than he is currently able to visit on foot.

Cost of Motorbike for education outreach: £1000

TOTAL FUNDRAISING GOAL: £3000

Every donation, no matter how small, will be deeply appreciated by the many Kawiya people it will benefit, in particular a generation of children and young people who will be healthier and better nourished as a result.
