Help Felipe and His Family

“Felipe” has lived in Columbia Heights/Mount Pleasant for a decade and his family have been here for nearly twenty years. After losing his job during the pandemic and suffering from COVID himself, Felipe was able to find a position in custodial work and quickly get promoted from supervisor to manager. He is the breadwinner for his family and his baby sister's favorite adult.
Felipe was recently arrested over a dispute with a neighbor. When the police arrived at Felipe’s home, they entered without a search warrant and kept the family awake and in a state of terror until 4 in the morning, when the warrant finally arrived. Even though the charges against Felipe were dropped and even though DC is purportedly a sanctuary city, the US Marshals handed Felipe over to the ICE at the DC Courthouse.He is now facing imminent deportation in ICE detention. Felipe is afraid that if he is deported back to Guatemala, he will be targeted by people that previously threatened his life.
Conflicts happen in communities but so do relationship building and support. Detention and deportation should never be the solution. We don't dispose of our neighbors simply because of conflict and we certainly don't put their families at risk.
Felipe’s family has faced too many hardships during the pandemic and now as a result of Felipe’s detention. Felipe, his mother Maria, and her husband all suffered from Covid-19 and lost their livelihoods in the last year. Without Felipe’s significant contributions, his family has fallen behind on rent and utilities and is facing potential eviction. We are currently raising money to make sure that Felipe’s family can stay in their home, but please watch this space for updates as we work to bring Felipe home to his family.

Cuando la policía llegó a la casa de Felipe, entraron sin una orden, y mantuvieron a la familia despierta y en un estado de terror hasta las 4 de la madrugada, cuando por fin llegó la orden. Aunque los cargos en contra de Felipe fueron descartados, y aunque DC es supuestamente una ciudad santuaria, los US Marshals entregaron a Felipe a migración en la corte de DC. Actualmente está enfrentando detención y una posible deportación. Felipe teme de que si le deportan a Guatemala, puede sufrir ataques por la misma gente que anteriormente le amenazaron de muerte.
