RHCRU - Caring for elephants through COVID-19

The Rory Hensman Conservation & Research Unit (RHCRU) is dedicated to the holistic and sustainable conservation of elephants and other wildlife in a modernizing Africa. RHCRU continues the legacy of Rory Hensman, a man whose wish was that through education and knowledge of the wonders of the elephant, we humans would be motivated to look after them and other species.
RHCRU’s partner organization is Adventures with Elephants (AWE) . AWE has been established in the Bela Bela community of Limpopo, South Africa for the last ten years as a top educational tourist destination for people from all over the world. AWE is also actively involved in conducting community conservation, education and upliftment programs and is a renowned elephant research center. The elephants live a free-range life on a reserve that they share with other wildlife, and are cared for a by a dedicated, passionate and experienced team.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused large cancellations of booked tours and travel to our region, which we understand and support. The cancellations have resulted in us looking at ways to support Adventures with Elephants primarily and other organizations where we can.
This special herd of elephants have access to natural feed but we are hoping to raise funds that will assist their supplementary feed requirements and ensure that none of the elephant carers lose their jobs.
Our hope is someday you have the chance to meet these elephants and people in person to really understand how amazing they are. The elephants are one of the few African elephant herds under human care that are used for media, education and research. Scientists and university students from all over the world come to learn from these elephants and their handlers. The handlers are an awesome bunch of people who have dedicated their lives to care for these elephants. Since we can't travel to them, they are not getting any income from the tourism or research activities. We have to get them through this COVID-19 crisis!
Our aim is to secure donations of $10 or more from 2000 people or organizations on a monthly basis. This will go a very long way to keeping this incredible facility, the elephants, and the staff, going through this difficult time so that they can continue fostering a world-wide love and admiration for elephants.
