Jambo everyone!

My name is Alex, and this May I’ll be heading to Tanzania to volunteer at Bright English Medium School (BEMS).

BEMS is a school founded by Juliana and Mr. Baraka to provide education and a better future for over 350 children in the local community, especially from the Maasai tribes. Without this school, many of these children wouldn’t have access to education at all.

The school isn’t funded by the government — it was started by locals as an orphanage, and now provides a safe space, education, food, and care to kids who otherwise wouldn’t have access to any of that. Around 200 kids stay at the school, and many come from Maasai communities where education isn’t always supported or available.

What the school urgently needs right now:

The most pressing issue at the moment is nutrition. The school can only afford basic meals. Without proper nutrition, the kids are experiencing serious health issues, including tooth decay and other developmental problems. We want to be able to give them a healthier, more balanced diet — something every child deserves.

Another huge challenge is overcrowding in the classrooms. With 50–70 kids per class, it's incredibly hard for them to focus and learn properly. We urgently need to build more classrooms to improve their learning environment.

‍To help raise money, I’ve set myself a challenge:

I'll be running 150km throughout the month (approx. 5k a day) before arriving to BEMS. I'll be sharing the journey over on Instagram over the coming months :)

These kids deserve way more than the bare minimum. They deserve clean dorms, good food, and real opportunities.
