So, a group of TAMU graduate and undergraduate students has established a mutual aid program where we deliver groceries to anyone in need in the Bryan/College Station area for free. Since starting the mutual aid program in April, we've had over 80 requests for assistance and have delivered groceries to over 37 families in BCS, with our average grocery trip costing about $56.
Recently, we've seen an increased number of requests, and we only expect that number to grow as mass layoffs continue. In fact, the unemployment rate for Brazos County in June was 9%, a 246% increase over April's unemployment rate of 2.6%. Both Bryan and College Station Utilities have have resumed utility disconnections, putting 2,200 of our neighbors in jeopardy of losing their utilities during the hottest part of the year and in the middle of a pandemic.
We are trying to raise $3,000 to help provide groceries for those in our communities who have been hit hard by the pandemic and the resulting economic fallout. If our average grocery trip costs $56, then $3,000 would allow us to purchase groceries for around 90 individuals and families. Provided our current rate of requests holds steady, this amount would allow us to continue providing mutual aid through the end of the summer.
Please help us support our neighbors!
