Bhangazi Horse Safaris is situated in St. Lucia, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, where we operate horseback riding trails and safaris in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.
As of the 27th of March, South Africa is under lock-down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the lock-down the number of rides had already drastically declined. It is highly likely that it will take a while for the rides to pick up again when South Africa comes out of lock-down, currently scheduled for the 16th of April. The lock-down and its effects could however last much longer.

Bhangazi Horse Safaris has a herd of 17 lovely horses that normally take our guests on adventures on the beach or in the bush. Due to the current lock-down restrictions, we are only allowed to look after them with minimal staff, and their grazing time is reduced to about 4-5 hours a day. As a result we will need to supplement their diet with extra horse feed and hay during the pandemic.
Our first priority has always been and remains the well-being of the horses and our staff. However, without rides there is no money coming in to run our stables. We have made all financial reserves available to cover our operating expenses for as long as possible, and have applied for government support and hefty business loans, but we can still really use your help!
The costs for feeding and medical expenses are approximately R1500 / €90 per horse per month. Feeding our whole herd for a month will cost approximately R25 500 / €1530. Since it will most likely take more than three months before rides will pick up again, our total costs could rise to (or exceed) €4600 over the next months.

Please help us feed and take care of our horses!
Should you be willing and able to make a donation, we can promise you to exclusively use it for feed and medical expenses of the horses. It will also allow us a ‘financial breather’ so we can use our financial reserves to retain our staff and cover the other operating costs for the time being. With your help we can sit out the coronavirus-crisis and remain a viable horse safari business!
We want to give back to everyone that helps us through these difficult times, so we are willing to give anyone that donates and finds themselves in the area a discount on their horse ride. Please contact us and show us proof of your donation (e.g. bank statement) which we will count as a down payment towards a ride with Bhangazi Horse Safaris. This will be valid for any ride before the 31st of December 2021!
If you wish to find out more about our horses, please take a look at our website: https://www.bhangazihorsesafaris.com/, instagram page @bhangazihorsesafaris or find us on Facebook @bhangazihorsesafaris. We are happy to answer any questions you might have regarding our horses and their well-being.
If you are having difficulty donating through the GoFundMe-page, you can also use our PayPal account: PayPal.me/GeertvandeWiel
Our initial goal was €4600. Over the past weeks we've also been receiving private donations and donations through PayPal. We will keep you updated on the additional donations. The amounts of donations through other channels will be deducted from the final goal on our GoFundMe page.
