Help Fatoumata Get a Functioning Heart

Fatoumata, a young woman from Guinea, was born with a heart condition called valve stenosis, which is a narrowing of the valve in the large blood vessel branching off the heart (aorta). This narrowing keeps the valve from opening fully, reducing blood flow to the body and making the heart work harder. As a result, the heart is weakened, causing chest pain, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Multiple surgeries are needed overtime as the person grows to ensure that their heart is able to pump blood through the entire body.

 

Thanks to the child-focused NGO Terre des Hommes ("Land of Men"), Fatoumata was able to get surgery for a functioning valve 2002 and another one in 2010. Today, she is a young adult with the heart valve of a child, which means her heart cannot properly pump blood through her body. As a result, she faints 4 to 5 times a day, her feet are constantly swollen and has so little energy that she is barely able to move. Unfortunately, since she is a not a child anymore, she cannot get help from the NGO again.

 

However, there is hope. Though Guinea does not have the medical facility to perform the surgery she needs, Fatoumata can get operated to get the heart valve of an adult if she goes outside the country. Depending on where she goes, the surgery will cost between $30,000 and $50, 000 on top of all the other hospital fees, costs of travel, food and lodging for her mother.

 

On behalf of Fatoumata and her family, we are asking you to open your heart this holiday season and help her get her life back. She wants to be a biologist but as of right now her dreams, education and entire future are on hold until we can make this happen. Fatoumata, une jeune femme originaire de Guinée-Conakry, est née avec une maladie cardiaque appelée sténose valvulaire, qui consiste en un rétrécissement de la valve du grand vaisseau sanguin dérivé du cœur (aorte). Ce rétrécissement empêche la valve de s'ouvrir complètement, ce qui réduit le flux sanguin vers le corps et oblige le cœur à travailler davantage. En conséquence, le cœur est affaibli, ce qui provoque des douleurs thoraciques, de la fatigue et un essoufflement. De multiples interventions chirurgicales sont nécessaires au fur et à mesure que la personne grandit pour s'assurer que son cœur est capable de pomper le sang dans tout le corps.

 

Grâce à l'ONG Terre des Hommes, qui s'occupe des enfants, Fatoumata a pu être opérée d'une valve fonctionnelle en 2002 et d'une autre en 2010. Aujourd'hui, elle est une jeune adulte avec la valve cardiaque d'un enfant, ce qui signifie que son cœur ne peut pas pomper correctement le sang dans son corps. En conséquence, elle s'évanouit 4 à 5 fois par jour, ses pieds sont constamment enflés et elle a si peu d'énergie qu'elle est à peine capable de bouger. Malheureusement, comme elle n'est plus une enfant, elle ne peut plus bénéficier de l'aide de l'ONG.

 

Cependant, il y a de l'espoir. Bien que la Guinée ne dispose pas des installations médicales nécessaires pour pratiquer l'opération dont elle a besoin, Fatoumata peut être opérée pour obtenir la valve cardiaque d'un adulte si elle sort du pays. Selon l'endroit où elle se rend, l'opération coûtera entre 30 000$ et 50 000$, en plus de tous les autres frais d'hôpital, des frais de voyage, de nourriture et d'hébergement de sa mère.
