Help family rebuild after beirut explosion

Donation protected
My name is Elie El Chayeb and I am a Lebanese citizen.
Unfortunately, recent circumstances have obliged me to share my experience and story. As many of you know, a very short while ago, a huge explosion happened in the Beirut port in Lebanon, in which tons of ammonium nitrate detonated leaving unimaginable damage in the capital. Below is my story.

I was born on September 1st in 1981. Three years later, my father died in a work accident, my mother remarried and I was raised by my grandfather. As for my professional life, I earned a degree in Hospitality and worked in that field for years, until October 2019 – the beginning of the Lebanese revolution – during which I became jobless. I have been married since 2012 and had a daughter on the 11th of November 2013.

Quite recently, I received my grandfather’s house from its previous renters and had to rehabilitate it as it was in very bad condition. This refurbishment cost me all my savings, right before the huge depreciation of the Lebanese lira’s monetary value.
For the first time, I finally had a home that I personally repaired and installed parts of, and my family was healthy and safe. I couldn’t be happier and more proud.

The 4th of August, 2020 – the day I almost lost everything.
On this day, everything changed. I had been planning to move to the new house; however, sadly enough, this house lies in the Karantina area – approximately 400 meters away from the site of the explosion. We were in a room directly in front of the new appartment. I heard the first blast and had a hunch that something would follow. So, I instantly made sure my wife and daughter stooped down and covered them with my body.

It all happened in a matter of seconds – what felt like a nightmare suddenly became a reality. There was blood everywhere and until this moment, I still can’t understand how I gathered the strength and managed to take my family to the nearest hospital – which had also been damaged.

This explosion immensely affected us physically. My wife got fifty stitches distributed on her shoulder, back and hand. My daughter also had the two of her ears stitched on both the outside and the inside, as we were told the power of the blast had ripped them off. Her forehead, lips, shoulder and whole left leg were also stitched. As for me, I had ninety stitches on my forehead and twenty distributed around my head. My right hand had the most serious damage, as I lost part of my flesh (till the bone appeared) while covering my daughter’s face.

Materialistically, as expected, there were many heavy damages to the house. The roof literally collapsed, the walls cracked or bent over, and the windows and doors blew off. All the furniture and objects inside the house either had irreparable damages or got stolen during one of the three robberies that happened in the area throughout the days following the explosion. During those days, robbers took advantage of the grieving families and community, and no official security forces were protecting what’s left of a so-called house.

Now that all of this has unfortunately happened, my primary concern and main priority is providing a shelter for my family – which i’m no longer capable of.
What worsens my situation even more is the total absence of official aid and the lack of resources.
As such, I come to you in a sincere plea for help. Whatever can be offered would be of great help, since any aid from your part would have a significant impact in my situation.
