For the past 10 months, Iliana* has faced one of the most difficult periods of her life almost entirely on her own. Shortly after discovering she was pregnant, her husband, Julio*, was detained by ICE during a routine immigration appointment. After spending 45 days in detention, he was deported to Mexico. Since then, Iliana has gone through the remainder of her pregnancy, a cesarean section, and her baby’s first weeks of life without her husband by her side, all while caring for her 10-year-old son and trying to keep her family afloat.
Iliana and her family have endured more pain than any family should have to bear. A few years ago, they lost their three-year-old daughter to complications from pneumonia. The loss devastated Iliana, Julio, and their young son. Julio had only been in the United States for a short time when he had to return to Mexico following his daughter’s death. The loss plunged him into a deep depression, and he spent his days at the cemetery. Iliana left her career and job to be by his side and care for her husband and son as they tried to cope with their grief.
Hoping to rebuild their lives, they opened a business in Mexico, but they soon began receiving threats and demands for extortion payments that put their son’s life at risk. Faced with this danger, they decided to seek safety and a better future in the United States. They arrived through an immigration program established by the previous administration and complied with the required processes. Both had work permits, and for a time, they began building a more stable life together.
Iliana worked at a restaurant until just three days before giving birth, doing everything she could to support her family. Now, she is caring for her newborn and her 10-year-old son alone while recovering from surgery, with no income and without her partner by her side. Her older son deeply misses his father and is struggling at school amid so much change and uncertainty. Meanwhile, Iliana is doing everything she can to care for both children and find a way forward.
A contribution can help cover their basic needs and childcare expenses, allowing Iliana to return to work. Beyond financial assistance, they also need something just as important: a community to remind them that, despite the separation and everything they have endured, they are not alone.
