In January 2026, Sofía and her husband Javier were driving a borrowed vehicle in their residential neighborhood when they were stopped by ICE agents less than one block from their home. The agents forced Sofía and Javier from their car. After aggressive questioning, they arrested Javier, who is Guatemalan, but released Sofía, who is Salvadoran, when she told them she had three children waiting at home.
Sofía and Javier both came to the US in search of a better life. Sofía fled El Salvador with a young son from a previous relationship over fears for his future in a community scarred by gang violence. Javier was also fleeing a violent atmosphere when he left Guatemala in 2016, and came to the U.S. to join his brothers. He is a skilled carpenter and construction worker, and prior to his arrest, worked hard to support his family, which includes Sofía, her fourteen-year-old son, as well as the daughter and son he and Sofía share, ages 6 and 2.
The long months since Javier’s arrest have been filled with uncertainty and fear. Sofía’s older son is now a teenager and is struggling emotionally in the wake of his step-father’s arrest. Sofía is afraid to leave her house, terrified of what would happen to her children if ICE were to take her. Javier’s two brothers have been a financial lifeline, but they have depleted their savings supporting Javier’s young family while paying their brother’s mounting legal fees. Javier is currently being held in a detention center in California.
One of the few bright spots in recent months is that Javier has been able to speak to Sofía and the children every day. But even that small luxury is in jeopardy due to the family’s current financial situation. Please consider supporting this loving family during this time of emotional devastation and financial crisis. A contribution of any size will make a difference, and will help cover not only the family’s basic needs, but their daily phone calls, legal fees, and mental health services. Please also consider sharing this GoFundMe with family and friends.
