My name is Marlene Smith. I am originally from St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, and I currently reside in the United States. I am seeking relief on behalf of my family (sister) and my community, who have been deeply affected by Hurricane Melissa.
My sister, Paula Smith, lost her roof and all of her belongings during the very first gusts of wind and rain. Her children and young grandchildren also lost everything. Several other families in Burnt Ground and Seven Corners, St. Elizabeth have experienced the same devastation. Many homes were destroyed or severely damaged, and the entire community is now without shelter, electricity, food, and basic necessities.
Paula is a hardworking, self-sufficient woman who has always provided for her family by raising chickens and other livestock. Sadly, she lost all of them in the storm as well. While her story reflects the reality of so many in the region, I am reaching out with hope that together we can help her and her neighbors take the first steps toward rebuilding.
Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference. Our initial goal is simple: to help secure materials for a roof, doors, basic household items, and food so families can begin again. I will start by donating $100, and I kindly ask that you give whatever you can. Clothing, essential supplies, or assistance with community generators would also be deeply appreciated. Due to the severity of the hurricane in this part of Jamaica, aid has not reached everyone, and the community is now relying on one another for survival. Some of the roads are so badly damaged that aid cannot get to them even if needed. If you would like to donate items other than funds which preferred, reach out to me separately so that I can provide details where to send the items.
I currently have a small solar generator to charge phones, but the community needs a more powerful one to preserve food and support meal preparation. Food is extremely scarce. I am preparing three barrels with food items, medications, and hygiene products to ship to Jamaica, and I have already sent three boxes of supplies. Funds or donated goods will help us continue this effort.
All proceeds will go directly toward purchasing the items needed for rebuilding, such as food, personal hygiene supplies, cooking and eating utensils, first-aid items and medications, bathroom fixtures, mattresses, roofs, doors and other essential household goods for Paula and other families in the community. Funds will also support a generator or two to assist the community with lack of electricity, assistance to other affected families, and clean-up efforts, including road clearing and addressing Paula’s immediate needs.
Your kindness and generosity will make a profound difference to my family and to the entire community as they work together to rebuild their lives.
With heartfelt thanks,
Marlene Smith
