Help Families in Honduras Rebuild After Hurricanes

Donation protected
Hurricanes ETA and IOTA had disastrous effects in Honduras. Many members of the Calvin University community have been directly or indirectly affected by these hurricanes. As a result, members of the Latin American Student Association (LASA) and the Student Senate at Calvin University have launched a campaign to raise funds that will be distributed through partner organizations that are present in some of the most severely affected areas in Honduras.

The funds collected through this campaign will be matched by a generous donor before they are distributed by World Renew, Isaiah 61, and the Association for a More Just Society to help families rebuild their homes after all the destruction.

Families, like the Pachecos, whose devastated home is the subject of the images we are sharing in this campaign, will be helped through your contributions. Coordinators with our partner organization AJS, report what the Pachecho family experienced during the first of the two hurricanes:

It was early morning and the Pachecho family was still asleep when Hurricane Eta reached their home in colonia Cerrito, Rivera Hernandez, in the northern part of Honduras. They had to leave their house running, only with the clothes they were wearing. Their home and belongings had to be left behind and were completely devastated by Eta. While many of Pachecho's material possessions are replaceable, it represented years of hard work and sacrifice.

Despite the suddenness of their evacuation, the Pachecho’s were lucky to have families close by to provide shelter. This family of three adults and six minors, moved in with another after the loss of their home. Other family members and friends of the Pachecho’s lost homes too. Days later, when a relative arrived at his property, he found that his residence and wall were destroyed- everything on the property left useless.

“Starting from scratch.” That is the current phrase used by many Hondurans now assessing what they have left. Despite the damage and the loss of everything, the Pachecho family has not lost faith and is grateful to be alive. “We are thankful to God for life, Jehovah gave and Jehovah took away, blessed be the name of God.” These are the words of the family, in one of the videos showing the damage to their home, which they shared with our program.

Our brothers and sisters in Honduras need help to rebuild, recover, and replace what these two Hurricanes have devastated and destroyed. Every dollar donated will go to organizations working directly in the devastated areas in Honduras. We invite you to join us, share this campaign, and encourage others to donate to help families rebuild after the devastation of the two hurricanes.
