Hi, my name is Elisabeth. I want to raise money to allow my Kurdish friend Fahri to pursue his dreams and become an immigration lawyer. Four years ago, I met Fahri as a political refugee in Switzerland. Through him, I learned about the Kurdish struggle, oppression, and racism Kurdish people face in Turkey and beyond. Today Fahri is living in Canada, where he feels safe, trying to build a new life.

Growing up in a poor rural community in the Mardin region, Fahri is the only one among his ten siblings who finished school and even university. He built a successful career as a physiotherapist in Istanbul before he was forced to leave Turkey. He became a political refugee in Switzerland and experienced life not only at the racialized margins of society but also at the economic, political and cultural. Kept away in remote refugee camps with no money and little to no access to healthcare, education and work, he dreamed about how he would be able to change his and the life situation of the hundreds around him if he were a lawyer. As a lawyer, he could speak for those deprived of their humanity in the Swiss (and many other) asylum and immigration systems. Eventually, he made it to Canada, where the situation felt slightly better for him as a refugee. But, for example, he will probably never be able to work as a physiotherapist in Canada due to the discrimination and restrictions he faces in his attempts to get his credentials acknowledged.

 

Despite all the hardship he has endured and is still enduring, Fahri never gives up and never loses hope. I admire his strength, resilience and determination to fight the injustice he sees in the world and encounters daily.

 

To be able to fight the injustices that he and other marginalized people are experiencing daily more effectively, he dreams of becoming a lawyer and working in the immigration and asylum law field. He wants to represent the voices and interests of those who often remain voiceless or unheard.

 

He successfully applied to the University of Leicester (UK) and accepted an unconditional offer to pursue a 2-year accelerated qualifying law degree starting September 26, 2022.

 

To apply for his student visa and start his courses at the University of Leicester, he must pay his tuition fees and prove that he has sufficient funds to cover his living expenses. Apart from personal savings, he has already secured a government-provided scholarship and loan that covers about 15% of the entire 2-year study program cost. Fahri has also applied for a student line of credit or a student loan at six different banks. But, he was denied every single time for the same reasons: the co-signer needed to be a family member living in Canada, his credit history in Canada was too short, and his income was too low. Moreover, unlike many other political and Kurdish refugees in Canada, Fahri is all by himself. He has no family members in the country and no support network.
