Hi everyone, Fahmida here. I created this page because I'm in need of some assistance with some emergency medical bills. In the land of America with it's great healthcare system, I found myself in a predicament with no medical or dental insurance, but had no choice but to go to the ER - here's my story.
I fainted early Sunday June 6th in my apartment. I landed face-first onto real hardwood floor, ruining my face in the process. My two top front teeth went completely through my bottom lip, before coming right out and fracturing my jaw in the process. I came to and went straight to NYU Langone to receive emergency care. I received 20+ sutures in my lip, and was told my teeth could not be saved. Having fractured my jaw and the sockets where the teeth were, there was no surviving bone to implant the teeth into. I was sent home with pain medication, antibiotics, and a referral for an oral-maxillofacial surgeon.
I saw the surgeon on Friday June 11th, where my sutures were removed and I had impressions taken for something called a flipper - which is basically a retainer with fake teeth attached. This is a temporary measure to help me aesthetically, to normalize my speech, and to prevent the rest of my teeth from shifting. I was told that a permanent solution, teeth implants, will not be possible until the jaw fracture heals in about 3-5 months. Even then, if the fracture does not heal optimally, I will also need to receive bone grafts before I can receive implants.
I had a meeting with the office manager at the NYU Dental Facility, as the staff there is aware that I do not have any health insurance. They provided me with a complete plan of treatment, breaking down the costs of each step I'll need to take to restore my mouth to what it was, if not better. The total cost of the process, start to finish, is roughly $16,000. The flipper is about $1,000, each bone graft $1,500, each root implant is $2,500, each crown is $2,250, etc.
Now, I'm not trying to raise the entirety of the cost, and the above total is not including the bill I'll be receiving from the ER. But help is help, and I figured that if I could even raise a small percentage of what the cost would be, it would prevent me from having to postpone any procedures I need to fix this. This whole situation has been taxing physically, and definitely emotionally.
So please. Share, donate, no amount is too small. Please. And definitely do not take your front teeth for granted. They are a lot more important than you think!
Lots and lots of love,
Fahmida
