Hello! My name is Yeukai, and I am currently teaching English at a secondary school in Nakuru, Kenya, as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant. I'm starting this fundraiser to help my school expand its library space and purchase more extracurricular reading materials for students.
The students, teachers, and administrators at my school face many challenges due to a lack of adequate resources. One primary challenge is that the school library is critically under resourced, which means that it is currently not equipped to meet students' educational needs.
The library space only has the capacity to seat 60 in a school of around 2,000 students. This greatly limits the students' ability to take advantage of the library as a place to study and read. Stacks of boxes in the library also contain textbooks that the library lacks enough shelf space to store. Since space is the most urgent need, the majority of the money raised in this campaign will go toward the materials costs (primarily shelves, tables, and chairs) for expanding the library into a new space so that it can accommodate more students and more books.
In addition, the library has only one shelf containing books that are not textbooks or course-related materials. This means that the primary library that my school's students have access to is not able to provide reading materials that suit their needs and interests. In order to address this challenge, money from this campaign will also go toward purchasing and transporting novels, history books, storybooks, and other reading materials in both English and Kiswahili for the students.
This initiative hopes to provide my school's current and future students with more of the resources that they need to flourish as students and readers at a critical stage in their educational lives. Every contribution brings us that much closer to making this hope a reality for my school's students. Thank you!
