Hi friends—I'm Evie, a trans woman poet currently completing a 9-month research grant in Croatia, where I am working on a new book and teaching creative writing (pro bono!) to undergraduates at the local university. I've also just been accepted to the Tin House summer workshop, one of the most competitive writing opportunities around, and it's with my top choice faculty member, the incomparable Patricia Smith. (Read her work yesterday!)
Tuition for the program, which runs from July 14-21, is $1600, and while room and board costs $800, I'm declining that latter offer to save money. (A few dear friends in Portland, Oregon, where the workshops are held, have already offered to collaboratively host me across the 8 days!) The remainder of my goal amount is for airfare (currently ranging from $400-$600 on Kayak) and, if any is left over, nights I might need alternative lodging/travel.
My small savings from my prior professional career in educational administration has been spent on transition-related costs, out-of-pocket PhD tuition at the University of Utah, and Fulbright travel expenses. While I'm being suddenly blessed with prestigious opportunities in the past year, I'm also reliant on the support of friends, family, and kind strangers to make it happen. If you can't give at the moment, well, neither can I, so understand! Please share in your networks if you can, and I'd be so grateful.
I'm also looking for gig work ahead of July to ease my reentry expenses to the U.S., so please reach out directly if you have paid opportunities for copywriting, editing, guest/intensive teaching, or educational/non-profit consulting.
