Help Evan regain his mobility
Donation protected
October 2017, at the age of 37, Evan’s 4-year journey with brain cancer, namely glioblastoma or GBM, began. GBM is not cancer that can be cured but can be managed through surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy, all of which Evan has gone through with little complaint or self-pity. To date, Evan has had four brain surgeries, radiation treatment, ongoing chemotherapy, and a myriad of drugs taken daily to keep him healthy and his immune system strong.
GBM survivors are rare past 12-18 months, so Evan has beaten the odds. His oncologist, surgeon and family doctor refer to him as their superhero with the tenacity and fight to survive. Up until this past November, Evan was unstoppable. Although unable to return to work as a Correctional Officer, a job he loved, he was at the gym and on his strict exercise regimen.
Evan developed three cysts in the surgery cavity that filled and put pressure on his left chain motor area, causing him to lose the use of his left arm. He had surgery on December 12th to drain the cysts, and all seemed to be going according to plan until Christmas night. The cysts filled rapidly, causing his entire left side to become useless, and surgery options were discussed. One option was extremely risky, and he was given a 50/50 chance of survival. Of course, Evan said 50% is better than 0%, so he agreed. The surgery would take place in Calgary if transport could be arranged. His mother was with him as well as his aunt and sister.
While waiting on transport and surgery time, Evan’s oncologist returned from Christmas break and said she had a better, less risky plan if he would agree and it would happen quickly and in Edmonton. The surgery took place on January 14th, where a drain was placed in the cavity to allow for easier drainage if the cysts filled again. Removing the pressure did not give Evan immediate mobility as hoped, but his nerves and muscles are firing to go; his brain just needs to catch up!
Evan is still in Cross Cancer Institute, awaiting a return home and a start to intense physiotherapy. He can’t come home alone so his mother will stay with him as well as his friends. Evan will need to have a wheelchair and adaptations to his apartment for his safety and mobility. It was also strongly suggested he have a recumbent bike to strengthen his weak side and increase his overall strength.
We are asking you to help Evan become strong and independent again. Evan is one of the first people to step up and help his friends who need him. Let’s do the same for him.
