Help Eva with her legal fees
On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 1st of last year, I went to the state capital to lobby for the right to vote to be reinstated to all Iowans with past felony convictions, as BLM activists had done several times in the weeks before. Soon after arriving on the capital grounds, police and state troopers pulled people from the crowd without explanation, tensions quickly grew, and then the group of activists I was with that day was attacked en masse by law enforcement.
During the altercation, many of us were pushed, shoved, and hit. In my attempt to protect myself and the other women around me, I ended up getting arrested and faced with multiple assault charges.
After 8+ months of legal uncertainty, I finally have been sentenced to a year of probation, and my charges will be dropped from my record after this next year. Along with the emotional turmoil and physical harm I endured after being arrested and going to jail, I’m now facing the legal fees that accompany this process.
I know $750 isn’t much in the grand scheme of things, and I do hate to ask for help, but since I lost two good bartending jobs a year ago at the start of the pandemic, my financial situation is less than stable. I was unemployed for 4.5 months last year and then started working retail again, but currently less than 20 hours a week.
Any help will be much appreciated. My heart and work is in this for the long haul. I believe in a better, more just future for every person and creature on this planet, and I look forward to continuing to work towards that goal.
xoxo,
Eva
