Help Eva Care for Her Mom During Cancer Treatment
Donation protected
Dear friends,
I'm reaching out for help because my mom, Darnita, was recently diagnosed with endometrial cancer, and I need your support to be able to travel back East to care for her. She is my only parent, and she lives with my 90-year-old nana in rural Maine.
Even though she's turning 70 next year, my mom is a busy self-employed housekeeper in our hometown, a Maine ski village with a year-round population of about 400 people and a lot of Airbnbs that need cleaning. She does this alone -- hauling a vacuum cleaner up flight after flight after flight of stairs and schlepping nests of dirty sheets and duvets down flight after flight after flight of stairs, only to do the reverse hours later.
The first step in her treatment is surgery, which she will have in June. This will make it impossible for her to work, carry anything more than 20 pounds, or drive. She will require at least 6 weeks of recovery time. The stage and grade of her cancer won't be determined until this surgery, so we have to wait until then to know more about a broader treatment plan.
Unfortunately, the hat-on-a-hat-on-a-pile-of-hats of being an assistant for a decade/COVID/the Writers' Strike/show cancellation/short-order job/TV biz contraction has left me financially devastated.
Any donations will be used towards my basic bills, including rent, groceries, and utilities over the next 3 months; the costs associated with driving cross-country round trip; gas, tolls, and parking fees related to taking my mom to and from appointments; and overnight stays near the hospital(s) when necessary.
I know from watching the parents, spouses, and other caregivers of the friends I've lost to cancer in the last couple of years that fighting this disease is a job. For the patient. For the caregivers. As my mom's primary caregiver, I have to be present and focused on my mother and her recovery during this time, for her physical, mental, and emotional well-being as well as my own. Your support will make that possible.
I truly appreciate any help during this challenging time.
With gratitude,
Eva
