I am a missionary from Hawaii who just completed my first year at UC Berkeley as an applied mathematics major, and getting to study at Cal has been one of the biggest opportunities of my life.
During my first year, I was classified as a conditional California resident for tuition purposes because of my California-resident parent. Because of that classification and my Student Aid Index of around -1500, I was able to receive in-state tuition and significant financial aid. Without that support, attending Berkeley would not have been possible for me.
Unfortunately, I missed an important, and rather confusing email which stated that I was required to obtain a California driver’s license during the Fall 2025 semester as part of proving my California residency. I take full accountability for that mistake.
Because of this, UC Berkeley has officially reclassified me as a non-resident, only for the Fall 2026 to Spring 2027 terms. This single reclassification has drastically changed my financial situation:
My estimated cost of attendance has risen to roughly $82,000.
I have lost all of my financial aid, as the university does not provide institutional aid to non-resident students.
Despite my severe financial need, the university does not provide an option to request a tuition reduction for students with a -1500 Student Aid Index
I have contacted the residency office and am currently going through the appeal process, showing all documents that prove my California residency and ties. However, they have indicated that it is highly unlikely my appeal will be approved. I am also looking into every possible option, including emergency aid, loans, and other external scholarships.
I am starting this fundraiser as a bridge fund to help cover urgent education-related costs while I continue to explore official options. Any funds raised will go toward tuition, university fees, housing, living expenses, and other costs necessary for me to stay enrolled.
I know this situation happened because I missed an important requirement, and I am not trying to avoid responsibility for that. I am asking for help because the financial consequence is far beyond what my family and I can manage, and I do not want one missed requirement to end my time at Berkeley.
I know many people are facing their own financial responsibilities, so I deeply appreciate any support, whether that means donating, sharing this fundraiser, or sending advice and resources.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story and for helping me continue my education,
Ethan
