Hello! My name is Esther. I'm a transsexual escort living in Brooklyn who wants to stop escorting immediately. I want to begin to plan my return to my studies in philosophy and mathematics, improve my life and ideally help others make similar changes someday.
For the past year I have survived through escorting. This was an act of desperation for me. I tried to plan for my escape from the beginning, but COVID restrictions made things very difficult. I had no support I felt I could contact, found it impossible to honestly secure stable, safe, and affordable housing on my own (and so impossible to save money), and eventually found myself completely dependent on the men I met through sex work for my needs. It has been an increasingly shameful and isolating, and therefore unsustainable, situation for me.
Recently, an old friend and committed organizer encouraged me to reach out to the community for the aid I need to move on with my life. I’ve been trying to sign up for UI, but as anyone familiar with this kind of situation knows, this is a nightmarish and uncertain process. My friend has started to include me in her side-business of making candles and incense. We’re both really excited about the possibilities. The plan is that this, a few odd jobs, and your support will help me get to the Fall 2021 semester, when I plan to re-enroll at CUNY and take advantage of financial aid and grants.
Seeing that there are people who care, and beginning to make plans for a better future, have made me feel enormously hopeful and connected after a long period of hopelessness and isolation.
With enough funds to breathe, stop escorting, and plan, I can stop spending all my time seeking clients and spending all my money on rent, go into business with my friend, and enroll in classes again. I know too many women who are in a similar situation to my own -- without stable or affordable housing, locked in cycles of dependency with dangerous men -- and it’s my hope that in the long-run I will be able to help them as well.
This money will go directly (and ONLY) to:
ˑ༄ؘ Securing new housing that is both safe and affordable.
ˑ༄ؘ Application and registration fees for re-enrolling at CUNY.
ˑ༄ؘ Basic living expenses between now and when I am able to submit my FAFSA in Fall 2021.
ˑ༄ؘ Obtaining medical care and mental health support.
Any additional money will be socked away in savings, or disbursed to other SW I know who are in similar situations and would do well with community support.
