My niece, Esmeralda Alvarez, has been accepted into the nursing program at Dominican University—an incredible achievement that reflects her hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others. As a first-generation Latina college student, she has spent all 12 years of her education in underfunded Oakland schools, overcoming significant challenges with determination and resilience. Esmeralda is deeply committed to her goals. She has already completed a CNA program to earn her license and is a leader and role model at her high school, inspiring younger students to pursue their own dreams despite adversity.




Esmeralda’s journey has not been easy, but her perseverance and positive spirit have helped her rise above obstacles. She dreams of becoming a nurse to give back to our diverse Bay Area community with compassion and culturally responsive care. Her dedication to helping others is evident in everything she does, and she is determined to make a lasting impact in the lives of those around her.
