Help Erin make home safe while living with ALS
Donation protected
There are some things in life that nothing could ever prepare you for. Being diagnosed with a rare, terminal illness in your early 20s is one of them.
Erin was in college when she started experiencing weakness in her hands. Things progressed quickly and to the shock of her doctors, family and friends an official diagnosis of ALS was determined.
ALS is a neurodegenerative disease with no known cause or cure. Over time it paralyzes the body as the motor neurons responsible for delivering messages from the brain to the muscles die. The result is muscle weakness, wasting and eventual total loss of function in every area of life from walking, talking, chewing, swallowing and eventually breathing. The life expectancy after diagnosis is a short 2-5 years, but 2.5 years into her diagnosis, Erin plans to far exceed those numbers.
As needs and abilities change, lots of modifications and assistance is needed to help Erin. The most pressing thing right now is to move her bedroom from the top floor of the house down to the main level. The stairs have become intensely difficult and dangerous, she has already had one fall and so it's important to get her into a safer place.
This campaign is to help us cover the costs to renovate our current main level living room into an accessible bedroom. We are also hoping to raise enough to invest in an adjustable bed. Erin has a very hard time getting into/out of bed, rolling over, adjusting her pillows, etc. She also experiences a great deal of pain at night time in her current bed and a more supportive mattress and frame would be invaluable for both comfort and independence. If the campaign is successful beyond these 2 needs, there are many other costs we would love to cover, such as a wheelchair specifically for her instead of the ones she's been borrowing as they're not as comfortable and high quality as they could be.
Thank you so much for reading this campaign and considering a donation. It has been a very intense and humbling journey and as hard as it is to ask for help we know we need it. No matter the size of donation our family is indescribably grateful for any support we receive.
Lots of love,
