Help Erin and Charlotte!

Hi there! For those of you that know our sister Erin, you know how much she LOVES her sweet dog Charlotte. Erin got Charlotte when she was just a puppy, and they have been together through thick and thin for the last 11 and 1/2 years. Recently, on what turned out to be an unrelated visit to the vet, a large mass was found on Charlotte's spleen. Additional testing revealed even more masses all over the spleen. The vet proceeded to explain that 2/3 of these masses end up being a malignant cancer, and 1/3 end up being benign. The only way to find out what it was was to remove the spleen to biopsy the masses. Even leaving the masses alone could have led to the spleen rupturing causing internal bleeding, which in many cases is fatal. So Erin had no other choice but to move forward with the splenectomy surgery and biopsy what these masses were.

Fortunately, the masses turned out to be benign! They ended up being nodular hyperplasias which happen in only 20-40% of cases. This is the best possible outcome as the splenectomy's considered curative. Saying Erin is beyond happy is an understatement! She's so grateful Charlotte's masses were all benign, survived the surgery, is recovering well, and will live happy and healthy for hopefully many years to come.

All that being said, the care Charlotte received was exceptional and highly specialized, yet also very expensive. The surgery was the only option not knowing what the outcome was going to be.
